Sorta OT Internet Connection Mac OS

| Hi.
I have a question that i know some of you guys would have had experience in,
but just is just plain greek to me.
A friend of mine has bought an Apple IBook Laptop and wants to connect to
the internet.
I really want to help her out as she is desperate.
If i look on Google i just seem to find details on how to connect with
specific ISP's.
I am looking for just the way to set up a general internet connection.
We are both in the UK. When you pop in one of those ISP disks from AOL,
Freeserve etc on Windows you follow the instructions.
On these disks is there setup options of Mac OS.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

| I'm assuming your running OS X Jaguar (v10.2.x). I'm not sure what you
mean by "general" internet connection as you need a valid account with
an ISP to connect. Usually, ISPs bundle the Mac .hqx file with their
discs (look for Mac installation instructions or Mac system specs on the
disc or package). If not, you may be able to download a Mac version from
the ISP via a connected machine. If those fail, no worries as setting up
an internet connection manually is a breeze.
Internet connectivity on Jaguar is found under the Apple icon in the
upper left corner of the screen. Select "System Preferences" and a
display of all system configuration options will appear (think Control
Panel in Windows). Now do the following:
1. Click "Network"
2. Select "Internal Modem" from the Show drop-down menu
3. On the TCP/IP tab, ensure it shows "Configure using PPP"
4. The IP address field should be blank and it should also show "IP
address provided by PPP server"
5. Click the PPP tab
6. Fill out the connection information
7. Apply the changes
To then connect to the internet, click the little telephone receiver in
the upper right corner next to the time. Select "Connect". The system
will dial out and you should get a connection. Test the connection by
opening IE, Netscape/Mozilla, or Safari.
Once you've done this, you'll need to configure your e-mail and
newsgroup settings, as well as any customized browser settings.
