XP Networking Issues

| I have been using peer to peer networks for years, but this has me
pulling my hair out. The senario:
3 PC Network (2 XP Home, 1 Win 98SE)
D-Link DSL Gateway DHCP enabled 192.168.0.1
Netgear 4 port 10/100 hub
DHCP enabled on all desktops
File/printer sharing is enabled on all PC's.
All protocolls match.
Mike (XPH) can ping all IP's but cannot see Andy or Kyle nor access
its resources in the OFFICE workgroup. Error msg: Unable to browse the
network.
Andy (XPH) can see Mike in the OFFICE workgroup but cannot ping it or
access its resources.
Kyle (W98) can see Mike in the OFFICE workgroup but cannot ping it or
access its resources.
Andy can see Kyle and access its resources and vise versa.
Mike, Andy, and Kyle can all access the Internet. (To me rules out NIC
problems)
Any clues?

| Does Mike have a different subnet mask?
| |
|
| Are you running a firewall I have a simlar problem when my machine uses a
software firewall. As soon as I trun off my firewall everyone can see each
other and share files.

| Are Andy and Kyle running Zone Alarm or other firewall that has a rule that PING is not permitted?
What I like to do is take all three out of the workgroup and put them back in. Remove all 3 (In
Win98, right click on Network Neighborhood/Properties/Identification---- in XP, right click MY
COMPUTER/ Properties/ Computer Name) and bring them into a workgroup called TEMP. This will make you
reboot. Then, do the same procedure above, and bring them all back into the OFFICE workgroup. This
has worked ofr me on many occasions. Keep all firewall software off at this point.

| Since I'm using my router as a DHCP server, everyone is one the subnet
of 255.255.255.0.
There isn't any firewall software installed, nor is XP firewall
enabled. The router has built in firewall.
No rules about no pinging.

| Mike can ping Andy and Kyle, but do not showup in network places. That
would happen if Andy and Kyle did not have any shared folders. You
could ping them, but they wouldn't showup.
