| Just for giggles, I thought I would see what others in my area - or close
by - are offering...

hours driving time (round trip), plus gas and tolls.
The higher rate (Halifax) sounds good- until you consider the wear and
tear on your vehicle for that 100 mile radius. Then, of course, what
about those days where you end your day at that 100 mile range, then have
to drive home a hundred miles. Or when you have to start your next day
back at that site- a hundred miles away.

Now, this is the reality of my area- and it really isnt my area (Tampa, St
Pete, Clearwater)- it is just the closest city to me.
So, on 3 major employment boards there are a total of 6 jobs avaiable- and
at least one of those is not a real job.
I can tell you as an absolute fact- in my exact area, I have been the only
shop to hire anyone in at least the last year or two.
There are only 3 real shops on my side of the county right now. The
fourth closed their doors about 2 months ago. The other two shops send
their technicians home as soon as work slows down. I do not.
The other two real shops on my side of the county have let at least 3
people go in the last year- and I know that because they applied to me-
but not at a time when I was hiring. That does not include any techs that
were displaced when the fourth closed their doors.
The remaining techs are not real shops- rather people working out of their
homes or their cars- or one man shops. None of these hire other techs.
In the last 4 years, I have seen lot less than 6 real shops close their
doors in my exact area.
I know of a number of individual tech that left the industry completely to
get more money- including a few people I know of that were in business for
themselves.
I know of at least 3 different people that have booths in the local flea
markets and do tech work or sales of cheap parts to supplement their
income.
THESE are the realities of this industry- as far as Pasco County, FL goes.
I am quite sure the guy here that lives in Land o Lakes (about 30-45
minutes from me) can verify!
Those of you who second guess me, or my shop, or the conditions in this
area, really need to check themselves. Know of what you speak. Just as I
would not presume to speak with authority anything having to do with your
area of the country, or your living conditions, or aything else like that.

Unfortunately this is a reality if the west central Florida area. I have
been in my position where I am for the last 3 years working helpdesk. It is
not the dream job that I have wanted, but it is stable work and pays the
bills. The place where I work at has let people go over the past 2 years for
downsizing, but are starting to hire once again, The only problem is that
for people that are doing the exact same job that I am doing are getting
paid less to start then what I started at 3 years ago, Now I have had a few
pay-raises since then and am making more now.
I really do not want to say which employer I work for, but the attrition
rate is high in my department. The salaries are just very low in this area.
Most of the people I have spoken to have jobs where they are treated like
dirt since the employeer knows that it is not easy for someone to leave
today and be working somewhere else tomorrow. The jobs in this area are bad,
but I would not give up living in this area for anything. The only reason I
stay where I am at now is a false sense of security and my determination to
finish my bachelor's degree before I turn 50, (I am 30 now.)
Eventually the market place will pick up and people will start to realize
that more people need to be hired on to handle the workload that is being
put to the various departments that dealing with them. That day is right
around the corner, (In the year 2547.) Hopefully much sooner, but I am not a
predictor of the future o I cannot say. I do know that once the economy does
pick back up it will be better, but not as good as in the past.

Thanx lglover...
It is nice to see someone who realizes the way life is out there- not like
some of the dreamers and malcontents that have been slamming me over what
they perceive as my personal shortcomings.. lol
It really would be nice if our part of the world was a high tech area-
where we can get paid decent money.
I own the freaking company and I do not get paid that much. If I had a
dream job offer like some of these posters claim there are out there, I
would close my shop and take the job!!! lol
Some of these malcontents think we small business owners are living in the
lap of luxury all the while stepping on the working man out there.
Further from the truth they cannot be. I live quite modestly- and not by
my own choice. Most small business owners - especially in the IT world-
are not living high on the hog either. These guys seem to think we get to
keep all of that $50 per hour we bill for, all the while meteing out mere
pennies to our employees.

| my starting salary was 0 per hour. I got A+ in 1999 when I was 19 and I had no
experience at all. I went to a guy at a computer shop and said I would work for
free. I went from there to temp jobs making really nothing.and now i make 18.43
but all i have is A+ and some computer company certifications.I mean it's not a
computer repair shop I work for now it's a big company.I read this newsgroup
everyday but usually never say anything and I saw ghost looking for help and
really just a bunch of dorks applying.I don;t know what you are paying but I
mean i would have took the job for a dollar a hour

| I'm not sure about others, but I chose to slam you earlier, because you
deserved it. I certainly don't mind discussion about problems ... but
bitching about problems that don't exist is just annoying. You CAN EASILY
get a qualified tech if you pay a competitive wage. Also, why are you
posting these kinds of job links for technicians and such?! We have all the
bad news and bad customers we need! Why don't you make us all proud and try
to be POSITIVE?! This is a group for A+ certification. Try supporting it and
the business that surrounds it. Try talking about how a business owner or a
technician employee can beat the bad economy and get ahead and make a good
living. Some people always do, but they sure as hell don't do it by thinking
negatively ... or low-balling or undercutting!
I hope your new technician is working out well. I also hope you are paying
him a competitive wage ... because if you aren't ... it won't work out. You
should be happy you are having enough business to hire other people. Support
them, and they'll support you.
By the way, again I totally agree with you about this business not being
easy for the owner. Also, I wonder if that will even change with the
economy. I think it's more the nature of a service business - a real pain.

Anyways 2 weeks after I passed the exam, I registered with a consulting
company and they put me on a 6 month contract which paid $14/h. This was at
the airport and travel agencies. At the airport Air Canada had just bought
out Canadian Airline... so it was more of an integration. The new PCs where
HP vectras ... this is were I learned how to create and load images from
servers. At the travel agencies we did the same thing but in a smaller
scale.
Year 2001 was the cable company year. I was hired to some piece work on
installing NIC and configuring IE for people who wanted cable internet, the
cable company had a 1 month free trail... so everyone tried it. That paid
$18.50/install, which took approximately 1 - 20 minutes. Some PC came
installed with NICs or had a built-in NIC on the motherboard. When I saw
those I use to say "that was a quick $18.50". There was at lease 10 - 15
call per day
Last year still with the same consulting company paid $18/h on upgrading PCs
in financial institutes.
( All of the financial institutes projects involved a team of 5 and was
complete very quick)
This year I tried a different consulting company, they had me do a solo
project "Windows 2K" upgrade at the train station which paid $20/h.. During
the last week of the project the old consulting company called me and ask if
I wanted to do some more Win2K upgrades which is paying $16/h with no
overtime pay and it's night shift 8pm - 5am..... I said ok.
I've had my share of ups and down on wages BUT... I would gladly stop all of
this for a STEADY JOB that paid an average wage and benefits.
When I say average I mean $17.30... :-))
