Hi People's,

I have been watching this group for a couple of months now and you all
seem to be pretty nice. I am about ready to study for the A plus
exams. I have been working with computers for over 4 years. Could you
tell me what to get in order to prepare myself for the exams? Please
go easy on me ;-)

I took the exam back in 2000, but here's what I did:

Bought a good A+ book (you might be spending about $100, but don't fret!)

Read the book.

Did the practice questions in the back.

Did all the online practice exams I could find (free ones!) over and over
until I typically scored over ninety percent. (...beware of erroneous
answers on some of them, but it gives you an opportunity to investigate the
real answers...)

Called Prometric, scheduled and did the exam.

....A+ certification followed shortly thereafter....

Good luck.

But of course Darma knew all that from lurking around this newsgroup. Hey

Hi Darma:

This is just my humble opinion, but:

Mike Meyers, A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, 4th Edition. If your
4+ years doesn't include opening up the box, then make sure you do that at
every opportunity. If you don't have a computer or computers available for
internal examination, if not tear down and rebuild, at least take a "field
trip" to one of the computer fairs and examine all the hardware. At the
computer fairs you are more likely to see a lot of the older hardware
referred to in the book. For the OS sections, it helps to follow along on
Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro. Do the assessment questions at the
beginning and the questions at the end of each chapter.

When you finish the book, do the practice exams that come with it on CD.
Also, you might want to sign up for the Daily Questions via email at
http://www.certguide.com/. They provide explanations to their answers with
links to cited authorities. When doing practice exams, always make sure you
know why the right answer is right, and why the wrong answers are wrong.
Also, the SkillDrill tests at www.cramsession.com are a good way to assess
your readiness, but don't be discouraged because they are much harder than
the real exams.

Do all your studying ahead of time, and make sure you get a good night's
rest the night before the exam. Try to schedule the exam for the time of
day that is your best mentally. I like early morning, but people are
different.

By the way, I think Techie is making reference to the fact your question has
been answered a thousand times in this Newsgroup, so if you've been
watching,...

Anyway, good luck with the exams and let us know when you pass.

Here's my suggestion to help Techie out of drugs.
Why doesn't somebody publish a FAQ?
Of course, Dharma's question would rank winner in the Top 10.
But barking FAQ! would be nicer than ARF!

Enough has been said on all this, however would like to suggest something
different than the All-in-One to a person who has 4 years experience.
Buy the Passport, same author, same CD, less expensive and more to the
point.
Buy the vouchers from them too, you get 500 Q&A total, pretty good
explanations, and you save like $70 on full price.
You can visit Mike here http://www.totalsem.com/ (no, I don't work for him).
As a method of study you should begin by the basics, download the exam
objectives from http://www.comptia.org/ and stick to them throughout,
although I got a question that wasn't in the objectives .
There is of course a whole slew of methods to get you through the test, and
you are free to choose whichever suits you best, but Dharma (intentionally
misspelt), never, EVER, mention braind?mp?, that really triggers Techie and
no drug will hold him.

Seriously, your best weapon at the test will be your cool and common sense.
Take your time, read the questions in full, analyze the answers calmly, use
your brain and you will find that most of the answers are pretty obvious if
you know your stuff.
Good luck!

Passport and FAQ - both great ideas. I really like the FAQ idea; but,
unfortunately, since we are not moderated, the FAQ would disappear like an
eleven-day-old post. Any volunteers?

The passport series is also great, but you kids are always in such a rush.
I like (or need, maybe) the extra 600+ pages of historical essays and more
in-depth explanations that pervade the All-In-One series. The Passport
prepares you for the exams. The All-In-One is more of a full course in
becoming a good hardware technician, which also prepares you for the exams.
What you choose is really a matter of desire, need, taste and/or style, or
even budget, as Pikoro suggests.

One slight correction: with the passport CD, you get 2 practice exams; with
the All-In-One you get 6 practice exams, plus a sample video of Mike
teaching class. I don't work for Mike, either.

Hey Techie,
Why don't you send them to the FAQ every time instead of getting overdoses
of Valium?
I didn't know that they existed either.
I already started reading those damned FAQ and will send people there so
will be able to focus on technical issues.

By the way, Zac, a little bit of flattery ("two great ideas") suits me well
after all the bashing.
You are right about us kids being in a hurry (I'll be a kid all my life), I
simply thought that if you have 4 years experience you might find the All-in
One a trifle boring.
You may be right on the amount of exams on the passport CD but if you also
buy the vouchers you get 10 more practice exams (5 for each exam), so I
think it is convenient because the exams on the All-in-One and those that
come with the vouchers might overlap.
I think the only one who could clarify this issue would be MM himself.
The reason why I prefer totalsem over ExamVouchers is the quality of
the CDs, you cannot compare Mike with Tcat Houser, and prices are similar.

Well thank you Techie for all the bashing. I am so sorry I can't be as
smart as you, but what can I say only I really don't care! Yes it is
true I lurked for a few months. I know about the AIO book by Mike
Meyers by reading the newsgroup. What I wanted was other opinions.
Must be the kid in you coming out, huh?

I really would like to thank the other "gentlemen" for the nice
responses :-) I'll let you know how I do on the exams. I am scheduling
to take them next month.

Darma :-)

PS --- Techie, Greg is fine! Hahahaha!

Don't worry about Techie, Dharma.

(at least electonically).

Hi Dharma,

A word of advice...if someone bashes you, you need to ignore it as best as
you can. Please don't provoke it! It just drags the thread on and on and
causes more problems.

Anyway, I hate to bash anyone because it is not my nature, but you did say
you were lurking the NG for the past few months, soooo you should know by
now what to read in order to pass the exams.

I call it, that you are overreacting, bashing is an attack and in this case
nothing was said other than "Must fight urge to attack.................more
valium needed....."

To be honest if I was attacking you it would have been along the lines of
"You have been lurking here for a couple of months and need to ask such a
stupid question? "

I already got the low down about bashing from a certain female that

Of course you are overreacting to this particular situation because I said
nothing to you in a negative way in fact I said nothing at all until you

Keep cool, Dharma.
Really what they told you is nothing compared to what other people get.
You must get used to this, don't take it as something personal, these
things happen in an electronic forum.
After a few days everything is forgotten and dumped in the great bit bucket.
Keep posting, tell Greg to forget it too, I've heard he was after Techie.

Dharma,

And you just had to mention that I emailed you, huh? I was reading the posts
over and over and looking for the so called "bashing" and all I found was
(must fight urge to attack....) which I found to be quite comical and this
had nothing to do with "bashing" you, so yes you were definately overreating
like I said in the email.

Techie, give me that damn valium!! *LOL* I'm just kidding, Dharma.

Please feel free to post away anymore questions you may have.

Good luck on the exams as well.

Cheers,

Ladies please, it is not good netiquette to vent private posts in public or
viceversa.
Dharma is not responding so maybe she chose to follow the Enlightened Path
and be silent.
Let's pay heed.

What do you mean "any harm was done"?
I got yet another e-mail from Greg today, my wife saw it and now I'm in a
world of shit!

Moreover, after writing that it is not good netiquette to vent public posts
in private I got the following masterpiece in my private inbox.
Techie, you can now envy me, I beat your record for moronic private
messages.
Here goes:
From Michael to Pikoro

Yeah, be nice.

And please for God's sake leave the poor woman alone. Now I know why women
say the word " MEN" the way they do, in that slightly annoyed overpatient
tone

They'll get over you soon Darma and they will become as tame as chihuaha's
