When you hardware supports it! and it doesn't cause problems with other
hardware!

You must have the correct type of 40/80 IDE cables and m/b must support it.
The position of drive on the cable determines whether it's Master or Slave,
Master being at the end.

Cable select is an alternative to setting the jumpers for Master-Slave
on the two devices of an IDE channel. There IS still a master and a
slave, this is just a different way of setting them. To use cable
select, you set both drive to Cable Select (instead of master or slave),
and you use a special IDE cable that has one of the lines cut between
the two drives (this is sometimes done inside the connector, so it may
or may not be visible). On such a cable, the connectors will be marked
"master" and "slave". The motherboard also must support cable select,
all modern motherboards do but that may not be the case on older
motherboards (one of the pins is grounded, but I can't remember which one).

It's just a convenience issue, it makes no difference if you use Cable
Select or explicit Master/Slave settings. Also, explicit settings will
over ride Cable select (which can really cause problems if one drive is
configured for Cable Select and the other for explicit Master-Slave).

Again, it's not an alternative to having a master and slave drive, it's
just a different way of setting which drive is master and which is slave.

Only if the manufacturer specifies it.
It is not needed since there are only two connections per IDE channel,
devices are either master or slave.

If you ever have trouble setting up new Western Digital drives use cable
select, avoids a lot of confusion.
