hello there, I bought a pc with win xp not so long ago. I have a dial up
connection but it drops the connection very frequently. I have explorer 6.0
as a browser, and all of the settings are fine. The dial up connections
seems to be ok but it does not let me browse at all sometimes indicating
that "it can not find the dns or server" it does not give me any other
error message. I called the ISP, and they say is nothing wrong at their end.
Whenever I do a tracert indicates the "target could not be found" Can any
one help????????? thanks

What ISP are you using. If the dial-up connection is frequently dropped
then it could be a problem with the phone line connection. There could be a
lot of people accessing the internet on the same line or the server at the
ISP could be just releasing you. Most of the time it is the ISP that is the
problem. They will never admit it though. The fact that internet explorer
displays error message has nothing to do with it. It is just letting you
know that you are no longer connected. The target cannot be found on
tracert if you are not on a network. You are using a dial-up connection
that is not connected then it will show you nothing. How frequent are the
drops. I have used AOL and Earthlink and I get dropped about 2 or 3 times
some nights and some nights I dont' get dropped at all.

Had a look at your IE settings? They might be set up to drop the line if
idle after a set amount of time. If memory serves it should be in
Tools/Connections/Settings

lets start basic:

is the line from your computer to the wall good?
is the line from your wall to the demar location good?
Line noise? Leave the modem speaker on and listen.
Is you modem okay? Are you positive?
do you have call waiting disabled? Are you positive?
Is someone trying to call someone when you are online?

The first rule I tell everyone is:

Is it plugged in?

Then rule 2:

Is it plugged in correctly?

Are you positive?

Sorry to start so basic but need to know the answers...

Dan is right....look over the simple things first.
Also, make sure it isn't hooked up with the fax machine. I did this before
and the fax machine was causing the connection drops. I also had the same
problem when someone in the house kept picking up the phone! GRRRRR!!
