Author No icons, start button, nothing??

About a week ago, I booted my XP Pro SP 1 computer and was greeted with a
completely blank desktop...no start menu, no task bar, no icons. Right
mouse on desktop had no effect. I could hit C+A+D and get the task manager
and run certain programs, including CMD which I used to backup some data to
my D drive. I tried going into safe mode...desktop appeared with 'safe
mode' in the corners but no icons, etc. I tried going into last known good
configuration and vga mode...nothing. I had created a temp user when I
installed XP for just such an occasion, but same problem when I logged in
as him. Time to reformat. I just wrote this off as a new 'Gatesbug' and
forgot about. Then today, a friend called with the SAME PROBLEM. I went to
Goggle and found a couple of others that had this strange bug but no
answers. Any ideas?

Was cleansweep ever on this computer?
If so search and destroy a dll called aspitrap.dll or atapitrap.dll (been a
long while).

Hello:
When I've run into this on clients' computers, a Windows reinstall
usually fixes the problem.
I would also attempt to eliminate the possibility of a virus by running
a virus scan.

It should, on a clean install. If cleansweep was there before, a repair will
usually result in the same condition.

Neither computer ever used Clean Sweep. Both use virus checkers. The
problem seems rare...not too many others on Google Groups report same
problem (less than 20). That a friend of mine had same problem concerns
me. We are both putting together a list of files we may of shared and
looking into possibility of a virus. He uses Norton AV with latest
update, I use Panda with latest updates. This does not eliminate
possibility, just makes it less likely. Thank goodness for Ghost.

Hello Dave:
Well, it sounds like you may have eliminated a virus as the cause.
Have you tried reinstalling Windows?
