| Hi all
I wonder if someone could explain to me, why on my system information, I
have IRQ's 16, 19, 22 and 23? In the books that I have read, they, show that
they range from 0-15.
kind regards
Vince

| They are called virtual IRQs and for the most part should be no problem, as
long as you have no device conflicts.

| Many thanks Daniel, until today, never knew they existed.

| I waas just about to post the same question in a different group. Looking
at the Win2K PC's at college couldn't understand why the IRQ's went up to
19! Any more info or links where I can find out more about these virtual
IRQ's? BTW 2 tutors who teach A+ didn't know either.

| I only found out about them by working at a computer hardware company. The
irqs above 15 are set by the motherboard BIOS we always thought it was
caused by a conflict or an issue with the BIOS but could never prove it.
here a few ms links that talk about it on a programming side
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...-us/w98ddk/hh/w
98ddk/kernel_9fn7.asp
also if you run a google search for virtual irq more info is available

| The extra IRQs are a result of the new mother boards and bus mastering.
| |
| Zucker 2003-03-28, 1:23 am |
| Are these "virtual IRQs" used by hardware or software to interupt the CPU?
Do new motherboards have more than sixteen (Fifteen plus one to cascade IRQ2
to IRQ9)
copper IRQ lines?

| Keith Heathcote
not!! busmastering has been around for quiet awhile. There are no "extra"
IRQs, those above 15 are a software IRQ.

| Zucker,
The virtual IRQs are software, at present we are still limited to 15 IRQs

| Hi Vince,
It's a great question and one that I see alot. Those IRQ's that you see beyond
15 are actually just the pc lying and giving a different piece of hardware an
assigned IRQ number when it does not really need it, I am assuming the hardware
you have with these IRQ numbers outside the scope of 0-15 are perhaps hardware
in PCI slots.

| Thanks for your time Feejis, the extra IRQ's in my system are as follows..
16 nvidia geforce 2 ti which ,of course is in a AGP slot
16 (sharing) netgear fa311 NIC
19 intel usb host controller 2442
22 creative audio pci, ES1371 ES1373 (wdm) .which I don't have, because of
onboard sound
23 intel usb host controller 2244.I think19, 23, are the two extra usb ports
that I added with a back plate.
Seems a bit strange, to say the least.Tried to find out
a bit more about virsul Irq's,but there don't seem to be much info around!.
regards
Vince
