What cause icons on the desktop to change by themselves?

P4, 1.8ghz, running win2k wakes up and runs fine. But, after a day or so the
icons change to a generic flying windows icon. Applications still work fine,
but the only way to get the icons to return to normal is to change the
resolution of the desktop or to reboot.

I had the same problem with win98se and just wrote it off to the OS, but
isn't win2k suppose to be superior?

Just guessing here but I would suspect the video card if you have one
because you mentioned changing the resolution. Another posibility
might be the registry being corrupted somehow. I suppose it could
possibly be a corrupted driver but I would ask myself why does it take
a day or so for this to happen. Is it just the desktop Icons or have
you noticed any other changes in the applications button images? Does
this happen RIGHT AFTER you turn the machine on or does it happen
after the machine has been running awhile?

Button images within programs are fine.

Icons are fine after boot. It takes between 4 and 30 hours for them to
change to the generic flying window.

I hadn't thought about it being the graphics card....hmmmmm.

Any more ideas?

Check this. If the url doesn't work, go to microsoft.com and
search on shelliconcache.
