I have installed win98 SE in a Pentium 266mHz and at shutdown it dose not
shut down rather it hangs at the point where it says "windows is shutting
down"

I have tried to install the patch from Microsoft site for this problem but
it did not solve the problem.
I want to upgrade the BIOS.

Does anyone know of any other good way to solve this problem?

If I have to go ahead with BIOS upgrade, how should I go about it? (detailed
guideline since BIOS is a delicate issue)
Thanks

try this site, a page all about win98 shutdown problems:

You can try this since you are running Windows 98. This is only an option
in that particular OS. Run MSCONFIG, click the advanced button and check
the "Disable Fast Shutdown" box. This might be the only fix you need.

If the shutdown troubleshooter site doesn't help, try pursuing problems with
networking - if your pc is networked.

Try this - at shutdown, select Log Off or Restart - then click cancel on
reboot so it does not authenticate a user. Then shut down normally. If it
shuts down normally, and you can replicate that behavior, then suspect the
NIC, drivers for the NIC, etc.

Long shot, but I've been there, done that.
