Ok, here is the problem. The cd-rw and cd-rom drives no longer show up in My
Computer in win98se. They also do not show up in Device Manager. I've been
troubleshooting this problem for about 2 days and I'm pretty much stumped on
it. So I'm posting to get some new ideas on it.

Troubleshooting completed so far:
1.. Initially, when I went into Device Manager, there was an exclamation
mark

on the "Mitsumi cd-rom controller with double speed drive" under the
cd-rom controller heading. It had a error code displayed: Code 10:
This code means the device failed to start (for example, it is
missing or is not working properly).

I checked all the cables and I tried to update the driver through Device
Manager but it did not work. I removed the mitsumi cd-rom controller from
Device Manager and rebooted the computer to let windows re-detect the cd-rom
controller. No luck. Windows did not detect the cd-rom controller and it
does not show up in Device Manager anymore. Not good.
2.. I rebooted the computer again and went into the bios. Both cd drives
were auto-detected fine by the bios. They were detected on the secondary ide
controller as that's where they are physical installed. Good.
3.. The computer has two hard drives on the primary ide controller. Both
show up in My computer and are auto-detected fine by the bios. At this
point, I was thinking it could be a bad secondary ide controller. So I
swapped the slave hard drive to the secondary ide controller and swapped the
slave cd drive to the primary ide controller. In the bios, the hard drive
showed up fine on the secondary ide and the cd drive showed up fine on the
primary ide. In My Computer, the hard drive was there but the cd drive still
did not appear. The secondary ide controller is ok.
4.. I swapped the ide cable going to the secondary ide controller just in
case. There was no change. Good cable.
5.. I checked both cd drives at this point. I popped in a win98se startup
disk in the floppy drive and rebooted the computer. It booted fine to the
startup disk and I instructed it to start with cd-rom support. I watched the
screen printout and saw that both cd drives were assigned drive letters. I
was able to access both cd drives and read files on cd's I had out into the
cd drives. I removed the startup disk and rebooted the pc again. In windows,
I pulled up the ms-dos prompt and tried to access the cd drives but it did
not work. The cd drives work.
6.. I further verified the cd drives work by popping in a win98se cd in
each one and rebooting the pc. The pc booted fine to the win98se cd and
displayed the option of booting from the cd-rom or the hard drive. Good.
I have pretty much eliminated the cd drives, ide controller and cable as the
problem now. I'm looking for a driver(s) for the mitsumi cd-rom controller
and have found some (I think). But the cd drives are not mitsumi drives. The
model numbers are ced-8083b (cd-rw) and crd-8400b (cd-rom) and are detected
as such in the bios. A quick search revealed that these model numbers belong
to LG Electronics. I'm skeptical about the mitsumi cd-rom controller and the
LG Electronics being used together. The computer is a HP Pavilion 8665C
model.

Any ideas people? TIA.

Try booting in safe mode. (if you haven't tried already) the drive may still
show in safe mode. removed them and reboot. they should get redetected. also
while in safe mode look for duplicates in the ide controllers, hard drives,
look for the listing other devices. if you find 2 listings for your cd drive
remove both let the computer reload the correct one. this usually works

to qwerty studios re tough problem with cd drives disappeared
is a tricky problem but i think what has happened is your windows driver for
your cd's is corrupt !!!
recommend that you go to lg electronics website
http://www.lgservice.com/bin/HPI/HpiHomeMain.cgi
via the link provided and get the updated software drivers for WINDOWS not
the dos drivers and instal them and see if windows will recognise your cd
drives then from tarzan_rulz@yahoo.com.au and good luck!!!!!
