Greetings.

The above crashed on Thursday. Was running NT4 Server.

On boot, the system will go as far as selecting server from the boot.ini
options, then displays the BSOD with a "fatal exception" message. The repair
option after booting from either disks or the CD will let me get as far as
the install/repair options, however from either of these the system seems to
think there is no hard disk present. Running Dell's own diagnostics though
do not show this to be a problem. No ERD exists, however a full backup tape
was made on Tuesday night so all is not completely lost.

Could I replace the server's own hard drive and start from scratch again? I
ask this because all the case screws are the Torx variety which seems to
indicate that one isn't supposed to go delving around.

The most recent change to the server was on Thursday morning when the system
was changed from an ISDN connection to broadband. IP addresses etc were
changed, but I can't see that these changes would have resulted in the
crash. The only upside is that I didn't do it and was off-site all day. The
server itself hasn't been turned off for at least 6 months, so I suspect
someone fubar'd a long time ago and the problem didn't appear because the
server wasn't rebooted at the time.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get back in?

You are at least in a better position than most with that situation. Don't
waste time trying to fix a possibly dead HDD. Just stick a new HDD in and
restore your backup from tape. In the future, consider a hardware RAID
solution for redundancy.

Watch the wrap, sorry.
