This is regarding a problem in a previous post.

Hi guys. can some one perhaps verify my opinion.

A friend has a Compaq 5335EA, running WinXp, Athlon 1.3 and 128mb Ram.
It kept restarting itself until the point it would not boot up at all. I
swapped the CPU and it worked OK.
Then after 3 hours it started having problems again.
On booting up it reached the initial WinXP opening, flashed a very fast BSOD
merror message and then rebooted.
So this is what i did.
I tried in Safe Mode. It rebooted
I tried another PSU it still rebooted
I booted into DOS with a Win98 disk and after 15 minutes it rebooted.
I swapped the memory and it still rebooted.
I flashed the CMOS jumper. It still rebooted.
Took the modem out. It still rebooted.
Removed secondary IDE cable and unplugged power to DVD and CD Writer. Still
rebooted.
Removed Primary IDE cable and power to HD. It gave the O/S error and after
10 minutes it rebooted.
I attached another HD, gave invalid OS error and rebooted.

I think i have exhausted all my options.
Any ideas would be fantastic.

Cheers

Darren

This is very basic but before you swapped the CPU, was the fan running?
And, did you install a new heat sink and fan along with the new Athlon
chip? About the only thing left for you to try is the motherboard, which
could certainly be the cause of your problem. The reason it ran for
three hours with the new Athlon may be that the bad motherboard
component is heat sensitive and cooled down in the time it took for you
to swap the processor. Then, at just about the time you thought it was
fixed (2hrs 45min), you put the cover back on and it heated back up.
Computer problems can be exasperating. Good luck on this one.

Hi Navin, thanks for your help. sorry. What i forgot to mention was that the
original CPU was a 1.3Ghz and the chip i replaced it with was on a 700Mhz.
Only one i had to hand.
So in theory the HS/F which was designed to cool a 1.3 should cope easily
with a 700. Is that right?
The CPU fan was spinning without any problem. I even put some Arctic Silver
on the chip.

Cheers
