Thanks for all your help. Still not sure which it is.
But i had to tell you this.
I have just got off the telephone to compaq.co.uk and gave them the part
number for the motherboard, and asked for a price.
The OEM version of this motherboard is the FIC AZ31 which can be bought from
Priceless computers for £29.
Compaq quoted me, and this is no joke, £302.
I told them they had to be joking. Then i thought they thought i meant the
base unit as well. Oh no, just the motherboard.
I again explained further some more information incase we had our wires
crossed. I even told him i could get it for £29.
He said no mistake. I asked if this included installation. No he replied.
Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing?

Truly bizarre.

Why the surprise? That's par for the course for Compaq. They don't want
you fixing anything of theirs. They want you to buy a whole new system.
Why do you think they use proprietary hardware? FYI- that OEM FIC board
will work just fine. But beware: IT'S NOT A COMPAQ APPROVED PART! It
will void your warranty. Aren't you scared?

Warranty had expired a month or so ago. Surprise, surprise. :\

Thanks for all your help. It was the CPU causing the problem all the time.
Replaced it.

Cheers guys

One thing you have to start watching for now , is that compaq has
started using proprietary power supplies and motherboards use the wrong
power supply and you fry the board. They have switched the wiring from
the power supply around.

Got a telephone call last night. Apparently even with another CPU inside it
has started to restart again.
Could it be something that she has plugged in? She has a USB scanner and
webcam. she also has a printer.
It ran for 3 hours at my house without any problem.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Bad CPU cooling fan. Bad memory. Loose boards or connectors. Bad power
supply. It really sounds like you're beating a dead horse. Talk her into
an upgrade then build her a real computer.
