2nd hard drive reported as foreign after xp install

| i installed Windows XP home on a computer that was originally running xp
pro, and selected delete partition as part of the setup, then installed it
to the new partition. this new partition is 100% of drive c. i also had
another separate hard drive, filled with my mp3 files. the install went ok,
but when i try to access the other drive it isn't showing in my computer. in
disk management, it is listed as disk 1, dynamic, and foreign. it has an
option to convert it to basic, but says that this will destroy the data.
i've searched the microsoft knowledgebase, and all i found was some win2k
info saying i had to import foreign disk. unfortunately import foreign disk
isn't one of the choices for me in disk mgmt. the only choice is "convert to
basic". i tried action/rescan, but didn't see any changes.
why won't this disk show up in my computer? it's likely that it is fat32,
(but i'm not positive), and the xp installation is using ntfs. but when i
was running xp pro, i'm pretty sure it was also ntfs, and it had no problem
accessing the files on the other drive. please help me save my files!

| Sounds like you were using NTFS with XP Pro. FAT32 partitions cannot read
NTFS partitions. Why did you downgrade from pro to home edition?

| Mu suggestion would be to get a copy of Partition Magic 8. This will
allow you to convert NTFS partitions to FAT32. Or FAT32 to NTFS.
That should allow you to see the partition if you convert it to FAT32.
Just a suggestion. PM 8 is a great program. Frankly I cant live
without these days.

James

| i tried partition magic 8. when highlighting the drive in question, all the
options are greyed out. i'm not sure what could have happened to it. i've
removed the drive, and will try installing it in another pc that has a
couple different operating systems on it. i'm hoping win98 will let me see
it. or i could even boot to a dos disk i guess.
