Network Printing Problems from XP to W98
|
|
| PATRICIA WILMUT 2003-02-15, 10:23 am |
| Having recently established a home network between my daughter's PC
[Dual-boot W98 and XP] and my own PC [as yet solely W98], I find that we can
print across the network using her W98 O/S, but am as yet unable to do so
from XP.
The printer - an Epson Stylus C80 - is locally installed to my PC. I have
installed the driver software to both of her Operating Systems, and -
according to the Control Panel - the Epson C80 printer exists, and is
designated as default, in both OSs.
Have followed all obvious troubleshooting prompts, but to no avail.
I'm convinced that I've just done - or not done - something utterly obvious,
but am a bit lacking in inspiration [- not to mention technical know-how!].
I'd be very grateful if someone could offer a suggestion, please.
Many thanks.

| Again, my experience is primarily with Windows 2000, so adapt my suggestions as required.
On the XP machine, log in as an administrator and enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP support. NBT(for short) is how 98 does business, while 2000 and XP rely much more on Domain Naming Service (DNS). The drill-down in 2000:
Right-click My Network Places
Select Properties
Right Click Local Area Connection
Select Properties
Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Select Properties
Select Advanced...
Select WINS
Ensure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP radio button is selected.
Click OK three times to close out the dialog boxes.
Good luck with it, and please let us know how it turns out.

| Thanks, RomeoMike!
I had to do a bit of searching around, in order to find the "Local Area
Connection" bit in XP, but having got there, I was then able to follow your
instructions to the end.
The result was that, for the first time, I actually got Epson's on-screen
dialogue box, which suggested that something was being printed - but still
nothing tangible spat out at the other end!
The fact that I am still able to print out over the network from theW98
installation on Mary's computer suggests that at least something is
operational! But the XP connection remains a problem.
Everything suggests that I'm so nearly there - but that there's just some
final stage that I can't put my finger on ...
Any further advice would be very welcome. Thanks again.

| Dear Patricia:
Glad to see some progress. On both printers (yours and your daughters), please ensure the default datatype is RAW (the language of the printer) as opposed to NT EMF (enhanced metafile). 98 is clueless when it comes to EMF.
Drill-down, as least as far as my Epson 860 goes:
Right-click on the printer
Select Properties
Select Advanced Tab
Select Print Processor
Set the default datatype to RAW
Click OK twice to close out the dialog boxes.
Other things to check up/clean up:
Take advantage of the troubleshooting tips in the help files (Start Menu, Help, Contents Tab, Troubleshooting)
Find and delete temporary files (those with .tmp extensions) and printer spool files (*.spl)
Ensure sufficient hard disk space is available to hold the job (at least 3MB)
Check for new/updated printer drivers on Epson's website as well as any possible tech support concerning your situation.
Finally (my opinion, not gospel), your machine (which is acting as the print server) should be running the most advanced operating system on your network. Generally, the newest OS can support the older stuff, but no guarantees the other way around.
Hang in there. Networking is fun--when it works.

| Some printers are simply not networkable, period, end of story.
For example, the HP Deskjet 880 was not networkable, but the 895, a
similar printer in the same product line, was.
What happens when you try to print?
Is the network otherwise functional, that is, do the computers see each
other and can they share drives?

| The fact that I continue to be able to print across the network from Mary's
W98 OS suggests that the printer itself isn't a problem, and there is no
problem in sharing files in either direction within W98. Additionally,
within her XP installation, I can quite happily view and access the [W98]
files on my PC.
In a nutshell, then, the printer is OK, and so is the network.
I've deleted and re-installed the printer several times, and each time have
checked to ensure that it's designated a shared printer, that the pathname
identified as the port is correct, and that the default datatype is set to
RAW.
When I attempt to print a test page, the print dialogue box continues to
activate as though something is happening, but the printer remains silent.
[I keep getting the daft thought that maybe somebody's printer half a mile
or so away is going progressively berserck with all these print jobs I keep
sending into the ether ...!!!]

| Thanks for your advice. Have carefully followed through your checklist step
by step - but still no joy! Shall persevere ...!

| Did you install the XP printer drivers?

| Trisha:
This in from the Epson Web site re your C80
Q: Can this printer be networked?
A: Yes, it can be used with the Epson External 10/100 Ethernet Print Server. The internal Epson Ethernet print server does not work with the Epson Stylus C80 since it does not have an internal slot. For network solutions Epson offers the Epson C80N, and for Wireless networking Epson offers the Epson C80WN.
A quick look at Epson print server prices show a range from $160-230.
One final thought: attach the printer to your daughter's machine and make it the print server.
Out of pocket for the next three days, so I won't be able to answer any questions.
Good luck -- we're all counting on you. (a line stolen from the movie Airplane)

| Untrue. Have two deskjet 880s shared, no problems.

| I was unable to share them, even with the drivers installed at both
ends. Also, the HP web site says that you can't share that model.

| That is referring to using printers on a network without attaching them =
to a computer

| Yesssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks to everybody for your help and advice. You're STARS, all of you!
Eventually got it working this morning, after [yet again, for the umpteenth
time] deleting the printer and uninstalling Epson's software from both OSs.
When I re-installed, and checked everything through, it just worked ...! No
hassle, nothing complicated - but I got the distinct impression that it was
just laughing in my face! Maybe I'd just been trying too hard before ...?

| Congrats!
Prayerfully, you documented how you did it, in case you ever had to do it again.
Secondly, probably a good idea to back up your systems while you have a working configuration.
Thanks for your kind words--we're also glad to see your persistence rewarded. |
