You can only share folders with Windows.

| Hello Ian,
Thanks for the web site.
But there is a part where is dont understand.
When i setup a user, to let them access a folder over the network, the user
still can't access the fodler. Why?
This is what I do....
1. Right click FOLDER click on sharing and security...
2. Select share this folder
3. Click on Permission... Delete Everyone
4. Click Add.... then click on Object types... un-select Buit-in security
and groups. click OK
5. Now click on Advancd... and click on find now..
6. I would select the user and click OK. ... then click OK again... then
click OK until I'm back at my desktop
7. After doing all this only the added user should have access to what ever
folder I just shared right?
Well the added user can't access the shared folder andf I can't figure out
why.
The only way to let the added user to access the shared folder is to not
delete Everyone mentioned in Step 3. But by not deleting Everyone ..... all
computers have access to this folder... which I dont want.

You need to create a user account for the user on the machine where you are
sharing the file.

Is the user being prompted for a user name and password on the server when
connecting or is it the same that they are logging into their own system
with?

The only suggestion I have is to try and make sure that you have the same
user name and password on both systems and that you are logged in on both
machines as such.
Sorry I can't help more.

| Hello:
Under Users and Passwords on the Windows XP computer, make sure the
"Guest account" (that's what it is called) is activated. The guest account
is disabled by default in Win XP.

| That would NOT be the way to do it if you want a secure environment
There are Share permissions & NTFS Security permissions to consider
If you are using NTFS, both must be configured correctly
Permissions can be assigned to Users and/or Groups

| Some facts:
1. Since you said you're using FAT32, NTFS permissions are not available.
2. FYI, the Everyone group comprises people who can access your computer by sitting down and logging in directly, those who can access your computer from across the network, and those who access the folder anonymously.
3. On the XP-based shared folder, give the administrators group full control, and the users group Read access. That should be sufficient.
I second Ian's closing thought on ensuring the user names and passwords match on both systems. | |
| natural_4u 2003-02-26, 2:23 am |
| I've done exactly what Ian siad to do, and still... that user can not access
any files that I share.
The only way for the user to access my shared files is to have the shared
filed set to everyone, meaning anyone can access the files on the network,
which I dont want.
