Computer Freezes at startup!

| Hey everyone. Okay, first off, this computer was working, sometimes
freezing, but not very often, and.. it's a compaq :/ The problem is
that the computer freezes right when the windows loading screen comes
up. the little blue load bar moves for about 3-4 seconds, then just
freezes! So, I figured it might be the hard drive. I put a new one
in there, partitioned, formated and started installing windows again,
working fine until it got to the windows load screen, where the
little blue bar moves across... it froze! So I know the problem
isn't the hard drive. I then ran memt86 and found out that there
were some errors dealing with test5. Since it is a compaq, and does
have crappy ram, and it's running an AMD processor, maybe the problem
is with the ram. I ordered a new stick of ram, but I dont know if
this will solve the problem. I can't get into safe mode or anything
because it just freezes when it says loading amdagp.sys driver. If
anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly apprecate them. Thanks for
any help !

What operating system you are running? That might help in
troubleshooting the problem. I would first clear the CMOS. You can
usually do this by setting a jumper on the motherboard: check your
manual for details. Then pull all non-essential cards and peripherals
from the PC and see if it boots. If it does, add them back in one at a
time. Post the results you get.
And if it freezes on AMDAGP.SYS, that would seem to indicate a video
card problem. Are you using a AGP card? If so, do you have a PCI
video to swap in as a test to see if it's the AGP card?

My HP Kayak did this when it had two non-parallel processors
installed. They were both Intel 333's, but not "specially designed"
333's for parallel processing :/
Adjusting the BIOS for single-processor operations (instead of
multiprocessor) removed the freezing problem.

| Maybe try a cd rom cleaning disk. Mine used to stop working / restart
before I cleaned it. But, It probabaly is a board chip bios problem.

It's either bad memory or like Adam said, your video card.....Why
Compaq?
