| Does any one know the speed difference? I recently installed a PCI
video card in my older 933 mhz compaq pc. (no apg slot) Was is a
waste? Should I have dumped it and gotten a new motherboard / pc?

Yes. Although the waste part was accomplished when the manufacturer
decided not to put an AGP slot on the motherboard in the first place.
They did save a buck though.

AGP (1X) has twice the bandwidth of PCI. AGP @X twice that, and so on
(although there's a wrinkle relating to bus width at higher speeds)
Was it a waste? That isn't a yes-no question. It depends entirely on
your use for the machine. If the machine now does what you want it to
do, at an appropriate speed, then the machine is worth keeping. A PCI
video card cost less than a mobo, RAM, video and processor and have.

| I'm interested to hear where you found a 933 mhz PC without AGP! That's
almost unheard of especially at the times that mobo should have been
released. I had an AGP slot on my 333 mhz Gateway back in the day! Just
found that interesting.

| Chris E,
How long have you been in computers? a week? Please stop posting before you
make yourself look any dumber. Get some experience before making stupid
statements like "That's almost unheard of especially at the times that mobo
should have been released." when in reality its rather common on the major
OEM PCs.

Probably inside a Dell or HP system.... Many 'all-in-one' motherboards,
especially boards used by Dell and HP, have on-board AGP video and do
not provide a slot for an external AGP adapter. This is very common.
It's only 'unheard of' by 'tekkies' who have very little experience
working with PCs.

| Well I made the stupid assumption that there was one in this COMPAQ
Presario Model. I ended up sending it back and ordering a PCI card. I
wanted to play a few games and had like no video RAM. I Bought this PC
to do some work at home (word and excell stuff) My old 100 mhz thing
would not work with DSL anyway...
Here are the specs.
Board: Compaq 06C0h
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Compaq 686C3 03/05/200
933 megahertz Intel Pentium III
32 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache
(from Belarc advisor)

| Did you check with Compaq to see if there is a memory upgrade available for
your system. I bought a P233 computer from AST several years back and had a
similar problem. Onboard video and not enough VRAM. The AST motherboard
was socketed for up to 4MB of VRAM. Once I installed the chips it worked
much better. Unfortunately AST charged me a small fortune for the chips and
the system bit the dust 1 month after the warranty expired (probably one of
the reasons AST isn't in business anymore). Bottom line is that it may be
easier to upgrade the video memory than install another video card in this
type of system.

| Well I bought an APG card that I thought would work and had to return it
for a credit so I bought the ISA slot card. I did not know about adding
more video ram to the board. Thanks, now I do. Next time I'll check
into it. Maybe I'll look for /at my motherboard book if I got one with
my PC from Compaq.
