Got my certificate in the mail - what a joke!

Well I got my certificate and 'ID card' in the mail yesterday. I find it
rather amusing that they can't even come up with an actual plastic ID card
considering all the free plastic cards I get in the mail that I never asked for
and don't want!
Most peculiar however, is the certificate. Nowhere on it does it say anything
about computers. It says I'm a CompTIA A+ Certified Professional. Great.
That means if anyone ever sees the thing they will ask me what the hell it is
and then I'll have to claim it means I know something about computers. You'd
think they could at least mention I passed two tests on the cert, that way the
name of the tests (Hardware & OS) would give a clue as to what the damn cert is
all about.
For $200US I think I would've expected more from a diploma mill.

A quick poll of my wallet reveals that even my library card and video store
cards are more impressive than the A+ card. The A+ card is on par with my Air
Miles card and my expired AAA membership card. YAY for cheap crap!

Got to agree, would have looked smarter if it was cut out of a cereal

It is pretty funny ant it, I got my A+ cert back some time ago. I showed
it to a auto wholesaler I got cars from, when we was talking about
computers. He looked at it, and cut a deal with me to sell cars on eBay
for him that very day. Now that was thanks to that cheap card compTIA
give us, I also got some pretty cool looks from a hot chick at Staples
when I took it in to get it covered. She showed it to some fellow
workers there, and it took 2 of them 15 mins to cover it. It was covered
the best I ever seen, and they only charged me 1/2 price to do it to.
The point I'm making here is, if people you show it to don't know what
it is for. That may be a good thing, as in my case it was. I'm still
selling cars as a power seller, for that auto wholesaler course of that
cute little card. And of course if you get work from a computer place,
they will know what it is for just like the workers at Staples knew. I
didn't even have to tell them, they knew already of course. Never use it
other then that, and to show family and friends of course. You gotta do
that, when they tell you how to fix their computers for them of course.
;-)

I agree with the below. And what did the Staples chick look like? I
think you should go back and try out the Palm Zire 71 palmtop in the
store and snap a picture of her for the group. LOL

These statements appear to conflict. If the Staples clerk "knew what it was,
of course", why did she "show it to some fellow workers there".
Your story is ridiculous, your embellishments make it sound like you went in to
get your wedding ring fitted for more bling bling. If you go into Staples to
get anything laminated they are going to be nice to you because you are a
customer. They're not going to laugh at you and say you are a loser for
wanting such a lame card laminated.

| The actual paper certificate is not that important... what is? The number!
Have you worked for a company that required the A+? IBM requires A+ as the
minimum. When you tell IBM that you are A+ qualified they always ask for
your card with the CompTIA ID number & Verification number. They have to
cross reference the number with CompTIA to see if this is really you.
I'm not sure what other companies do when they ask you for A+ minimum
requirements... but for a serious company like IBM the want to make sure
you're not bullshitting them.
But as to what you said about the certificate that doesn't have anything
with computer mentioned on it you are correct. People coming over to my
house would always ask, "what is that cert for"???
Damb I hate explaining!!!!!!!!!

thinks that I deserve the A+ cert.... but, if you think about it, you
pay all that money for books and for the exams and look at the
certificate and ID card you get in return.... and yes, I showed it to
ppl too and they say "what is it?" probably because it says nothing

I took the course twice, but I didn't take the exams. I did it just to
learn. How many of you really got a job because of the certificate?
| |
|
| Hi Joe,
I first wanted to do it just for myself because I love computers and
wanted to learn.
I got one job offer, but refused because the company wanted me to
travel all over the state of NY. Then my brother-in-law knows a man
that runs a computer repair shop and he gave the man my resume just
this past Monday, but he is not hiring right now.
It isn't all that bad, job wise.... you just have to keep looking and
be persistant :-)

I've been working in the Pre-press, publishing business for a long time. So
tinkering with computers is just a hobby for me. I think the starting pay
for A+ is very low in New York city and there are no openings.
| |
|
| It doesn't matter to me what the pay is.... I just like tinkering with
computers.
I got the job offer from an employer that did a search on Monster.com
where my original resume was.
I am in central NY.... nowhere near NYC.... either way, I am sure the
pay is the same no matter where in NY you are.

What is better? A worthless certificate that looks great, or a
recognized (worldwide) certificatition with a chintzy card. Think
about this for a long time...
No matter whether you have a certification or a Ph. D., experience is
still the best teacher.

It was an enhancement for one job I got, but they had their own test
to determine eligibility. Some employers may not have their own tests.
Manpower (at least at one time) used Brainbench as their source, if
I'm not mistaken.

I am taking the course to learn as well. I might be able to switch
over to the networking dept where I currently work and this is just a
small part of my studies.
A+, network+ and CCNA along with a LAN admin and web deveopment
certificate from my local community college should do the trick. I
hope.

| One of my B-I-L knows a couple of guys that runs an Internet cafe....
they also do the whole works.... fixing, building, and networking
computers. He has been talking to them about me and they wanted my
resume, so maybe things don't look too bad for me anymore.... This is
the perfect opportunity for me to finally get my actual hands-on
instead of just family and friends computers. So maybe now I can
finally get that experience!

I applied for a computer tech job with a repair shop in town, and they
also had their own test. Don't even know if A+ mattered to them or
not, I did put it on my application though. Their job ad made no
mention of them seeking an A+ technician. Their test is to give you a
PC with the case removed. They tell you it has 10 problems that will
prevent it from POSTing. You have 15 minutes to find the 10 problems.
You can't plug it in, so it's all visual inspection to find the
problems. Also, the positon only pays $9 an hour.
