When they said on the news that Microsoft wasn't going to give support
anymore for 95 and 98, did they also mean no more updates? Which I
believe so....

All three of my machines have 98 on them, but it's no biggy changing
over to the new OS, but the problem is one of my machines uses an old
scanner and I know for sure it won't work with the new OS.... that
really sucks because I don't want to give it up!

Kathy, Go to the web site of the scanner's manufacturer, and look for a
new driver. In my case, I had on old scanner, that worked well, and I
used the NT driver for Win2k and it worked fine.

Or just keep a 98 machine for old stuff. I still have an NT 3.51 server for
backups because the high cost for replacing the software with autoloader
module for that one.

Oh but the manufacturer discontinued the scanner back in 98 and what
they did was have everyone d/l the drivers onto floppies before they
took the drivers off of the website forever. They said before that the
scanner won't work with Win2000, only 95 and 98. It's a Vivitar
ViviScan scanner.... really heavy duty and they don't make scanners
like this anymore.... I guess I can let it go... I have to let go
sometime.

I can see another problem arising soon from this matter.... my
sister-in-law called me today... excited because my brother-in-law
brought home a used computer... he got it for free and it still
works.... she is not quite sure what OS it is, but she thinks 95 or
98, so I told her about the Microsoft deal and they would be better
off getting a brand new machine.... Nope, they would rather not spend
the money and just use this one... talk about being so damn cheap when
they actually DO have the money for a new one.... Anyway, I am hoping
that what I said sank into her head because I can't magically make
updates appear when they are gone!

Hi Kathy,

I wouldn't lose any sleep over M$N stopping support for the OS', they
stopped support for ME about a month after it was fully released...

You can usually get the 'old' updates from another site off of msn, and to
be honest, 98 with all the updates is still a pretty good system. Heck,
look hard enough, I'm sure you can still get files for windows 3.1 (3.11)
and dos 6.22. It's just a matter of what you wish to use on the machines
around you. For the record, where I work, we still use systems on NT 3.51
(robotics), various versions of dos, etc... it's just really what os works
with what you got.

I'm sure a big part of it has to do with the recent release of the new 64
bit processors. M$N has been doling a lot of time to the new xp for these
processors, and their new OS (longhorn), which isn't to be released now
until 2006. If you really feel that attached to the scanner, keep it. Just
update the system when the scanner dies, or save your money for that next
system you need ;-)

No way would I lose sleep over it :-) I just think it isn't right for
M$ to do something like this when they know damn well that there are
still ppl out there that still use this OS.... I CAN see them doing
something like this IF there were only like maybe 5% still using
98.... to be honest, I really like 98. I never had any major problems
with it like others have, but so be it... I think it is time for a
change, for me anyway.

Yes I know there will still be updates out there somewhere.... just
have to search for them.... no biggy.

BTW, my husband bitched a little when they said that on the news....
he hates computers anyways.... his remarks were "damn things cost me
more money!" *LOL* @ him!

Russ,

And you are so lucky then about you're outlaws! *LOL*

I haven't looked at the computer yet, but from the impression I got
when I talked to the outlaw today... I think it might not have a HDD
in the machine! Why tell me it works one day and then tell me the next
day that it came from a company that closed down and they had all of
the HDD's removed from the machines! I sure as hell ain't gonna break
into my stash and GIVE them one of my old HDD's.... this is the kind
of shit they always pull on me! I guess I gotta get a backbone and get
mean! *LOL* I have an idea though, seeing they all know nothing about
computers, all I have to say is none of my HDD's will work on they're
machine! *LOL* what a hoot!

As for the scanner, it's a Vivitar ViviScan compact VSF200.... the
thing is a beast compared to the new ones.

You rang? ;-)

Kathy, on the hard drive issue, get a copy of knoppix linux or the eval
version of suse, that'll fix 'em! Fits on a cd, boots right up, voila!
Instant os. Also heard of one that fits on a floppy, in case they removed
the cd rom drive, too.

Hoot,

I can't do that.... I thought of it even though I don't know a heck of
a lot about Linux.... the brother-in-law specifically said that he
wanted Word and OE on the computer. Now he says he wants the Internet
as well, but needs to get the cheapest ISP possible.... Believe me,
these people are VERY cheap! He could have went to Wally World and
bought a cheap one for $500, but NO! he has to get a free machine that
a company was going to throw out!

I will have to stiff him.... I can see already that all it is going to
cause is a lot of aggravation!!

My other outlaws did this to me too, but they came to me for
recommendations... I told them what to get, but they didn't listen!!
They listened to a guy at Staples!! *LOL* No offense to anyone here
that works there ;-)
And yes they got crap!

I had (still have) an old Dexxa (ca. 1998)scanner, and I thought all
was lost for it with XP. It took a bit, but some person out there had
coded a driver for it, and I was lucky enough to find it. There's
always that slim chance...
