| Hello All
I have a friends computer and old compaq presario. Anyway when I start this
POS up there isn't anything. No beep, no dos prompt, nothing. Not even a
blinking cursor. Now I've checked all the cables & cards to see if they're
seated, and the RAM also. I'm thinking either the mb or the battery.
Opinions please.

| I had a similar situation, and it turned out to be the mother board

Or power supply

| With a no post, no power, no video situation, you should bare bones the
system, and add parts back in. Making sure they are seated properly doesn't
matter. Having said this, bottom line is that it is probably power supply
or motherboard, and because Compaq is so proprietary, the parts are
expensive. Your friend may need to decide if he wants to put forth that
expense, or get another system.

Battery??? I don't think so...
My first geuss would be the PSU...

| PSU definitely.
Good luck trying to find a PSU on HP's website for that computer, depending
on age. A lot of older parts are beginning to be purged.

| Agree, Bad/dead battery would only result in time/clock to not function,
unless this is a note book and you didn't say that. PSU sounds best.

| Correct that, not meaning only, but generally. Sorry.

| I've been there. Did you check the power supply? No power is a problem.

| Yup sounds like a burnt power supply. Maybe you should get a surge
protecting power strip after you replace the power supply.

Compaq's can be a POS, that's the first problem....
My Brothers POS(Compaq) had absolutely no display and no beeps which
made it impossible to troubleshoot the problem. There was power,
indicator lights were on, but the monitor indicator light was amber. I
decided to unplug and remove the case, the Vid card was inserted into
the AGP slot which I decided to reseat. Plugged the POS back in and I
was now getting 3 beeps, if I remember correctly it was 1 long 2 short.
I ran home and got an extra Rage AGP card I had sitting around, this is
when I learned that this POS was proprietary and my swapping cards was
not going to work.
I played around a bit longer and made sure that the card was sitting in
the slot perfectly, BAAAM!! The picture of Hurricane "Isabelle" (I
believe) closing in on a ship never looked so damn nice before this
moment. The beeps were gone but now I was getting a 101 option rom
checksum error. I went to the Compaq website and found that the error
message was indicative of a new MotherBoard.....We were able to bypass
the error and work normally, but for how long....Time for a new PC....
