Author proprietary or upgradable?

A friend is wanting a new computer and trying to sell me their old one. It is a
Compaq w/ AMD processor- don't know speed, 60 M Ram , and 4GB HD and 14"
monitor. They say it is 4yrs old , but it sounds more like 5 judging from
original equipment. Anyhow my question is what is this thing worth. I have
heard Compaq is proprietary equipment and upgrading RAM and boards requires
more specific parts than regular clones. I don't have a clue...can anyone tell
me?

$489 will buy you a brand new COMPAQ WITH a 40 gig hard drive at
WALMART anywhere in the country. A 1998 edition of COMPUTER SHOPPER that
I have sitting in front of me shows me that 4GB hard drives were standard
in most COMPAQ Computers by the middle and end of 1998. So, you are right
about it being 5 years old. If the computer is in reasonably good
condition with all software, manuals etc, it's probably worth $50.00.
Don't pay anymore than that, because it's not WORTH anymore than that.

ok....thanks for the info. That is half the equation, do you know anything about
upgrading a Compaq. Can I use any third party RAM, CD, Hard drive ,modem..etc?

With that much wear, I would say more like $10.

Actually, after I posted my response I had the same thought,
That $50.00 was really high-balling it. The interesting thing
about that $498 PC from Walmart, is that it includes a MONITOR!

As a friend once told me, a $300 car can quickly turn into a
$1000 car after repairs, and a $50 computer can quickly turn into a
$350 computer after upgrades. And is it really worth it?
We all have to answer that question in our own way.

My customers pay me a good wage to upgrade thier computers
I love cashing thier checks!
And lets not forget...

4 Gig HDs haven't been around for at least 5 years - more like 6 or 7.
Old 14" monitors don't even make good boat anchors. You need to get the
processor speed but I'm guessing it's a K6-2/something. I throw those
things in the trash, especially being that it's a Compaq. You could
install a freakin' Terabyte of RAM and it would still be garbage. Don't
throw away good money after bad. If you just want to buy it so you can
play around with it don't give any more than $15 or $20. Or, you could
always come by my house any Monday, which is garbage day, and pick one
up for free. :-)

NRJ

PS Compaq is synonymous with proprietary.

It depended on the model at one time. My sister's old Presario 433
(486sx-33) could handle off the shelf RAM, but a friend's slightly
newer one a few years ago (P75) had to have Compaq RAM. I don't know
the situation today.

I bought my first 4.3 in January 1998, and it was still high-priced at
$360 CDN, and I think it was about the biggest size the vendor had at
that time; possibly they had 6G as well. About a year and a half later
a 2.7 that I had failed under warranty, and I got a refurbed 4.3 to
replace it.

That computer is almost worthless, as are any computers of that age.
It's worth perhaps $100. It would help if you knew the CPU speed and type.

The Ram, hard drive, modem are probably standard. The case, motherboard
and power supply are probably proprietary. Video may be either (it may
well be on the motherboard).

Paid $225 U.S. for a 20MB Seagate 5.25" drive (ST225) in 1990. It was a
boat anchor by '93 and was replaced with a Quantum 120MB for around
$425. I love this business. LOL

I recall a friend once saying that, while something may be
technologically obsolete, they are not necessarily functionally
obsolete. Didn't I read somewhere awhile back about US space items
(shuttle? satellites?) using 80486 CPU's?

I don't think the Space shuttle has 486's as it's processor since the last
shuttle built. Endeavour (Delivered May 1991) and the first one,
Enterpriseand (Delivered Jan 1977) and with the 486 not invented/released
till 1989.

In my opinion, the build time and development for a system as tightly
coupled/complex as the shuttle wouldn't have technology so new in it I would
imagine.
But yes the computers even on the newest one are probably antiques when they
were built. Even though the astronauts do use palm tops and small notebooks
for things, the onboard systems are fairly primitive. I can't find
references to the onboard systems on the NASA website though.
