I'm trying to figure out a problem that I've encountered with an HP
officejet v40 series printer. I'm using Win98 and the printer connects via
USB. At first it worked fine, but then the printer started displaying a
message "phone off hook" and it would no longer print. I tried reinstalling
the HP printer software, but it still won't work. I examined the device
manager and saw that the USB ports and everything seemed to be working
properly?? Has anyone seen this problem before? Any suggestions on how to
correct it? Are there new USB drivers I should install or get new drivers
for the the HP officejet? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Doesn't sound like a USB or printer driver problem, more like a printer
problem. Is there a phone line plugged into it? If so can you get a dial
tone on that line? If not, could there be a setting on the printer's
internal menu that enables or disables phone communication? Also, look
at the Win98 system printer settings to see if there's anything that
refers to a phone line. Good luck.

This may or may not help, but many of the more advanced HP USB printers
will not work through a hub, they will ONLY work when connected directly
to a USB port inside the computer (either on the motherboard or on a PCI
USB controller).
