| I wish I lived closer Ghost. Sounds like a decent job. Most folks don't
realize that some of the perks are worth as much as the paycheck. I wish
all bosses had the positive attitude that you have. I live in Tennessee
and I will never find a job in computers here, let alone one where a
person could learn more from a very experienced tech. Good Luck to you
in your search for a good employee.

| Hello. Thank you for sharing your views. I used to do tech work in a small
shop and saw the problems you are facing (billable hours vs true number of
hours worked, money to stock shelves, various taxes and bills). I think the
cable bit would be good to seperate the desirable interviewee's from the
desirable. I wasn't the master of all thnigs technical, but it was funny to
listen to some of the customers talk. On occasion, I wondered if they were
so smart, why did they come see me?!
Thank you,
Jason Whorton

WOW Ghost .. I read ALL of those post.. and I use to live in Florida
YEARS ago.. too bad.. I owned a Computer retail store up North here for 3
years before closing it. simply because I saw the writting on the wall.
When I was in the business. You never heard of a PC for UNDER $1,000.00
BUT once they started introducing the sub 1000.00 pc's.. Forget it.
competition was getting tight at that point! and I knew it would get
worse! use to be you could make 300.00 profit on a pc. now as you pointed
out. after all is said and done. your luck to get paid yourself. and your
working twice as many hours as the techs.
I have been in the computer industry for 24 years. Way back when.
before the PC Jr. came out. and the Sinclair 1000. and Apple ][ . etc.
started out programming on a old Dec mainframe and working and repairing
it. But.. have developed a few pet peeves over the years when working for
people. and I can honestly say. the one thing that means the most to me
working for someone other than the customer/client comes first. is
PRODUCTIVITY!! . I'm a nut for it. Worked for Compaq/Hp and shut my mouth
for the first 2 months working there, before I finally couldn't take it,
and walked up to the lead Tech guy that worked there and said LOOK you
guys are spending 1.5 Hours JUST to punch in all the code to test those
124 Hard Drives in that rack... would you like me to show you a much
quicker way. I was lucky he was willing to listen. I turned a 1.5 hour
startup time into 7 minutes!! ..
have dealt with so many kids in this industry that just have know
clue in how to take pride in there work. come in late all the time. call
in sick or with the lamest excuses every WEEk with something or other.
Think a T-shirt is a tux.. and that wearing the same pants for a week
straight with army boots is okay, because no one will care how you look.
I've helped start up more than one computer company, and was screwed each
time. gave 110% to them. last one with 2 other guys who knew NOTHING
about computers, I mean NOTHING. not even HOW to install a MEMORY STICK
in a PC. So brought 3 pc's from my home. set them up. and these guys were
sells men. they could sell. I did the building and repairing of pc's. and
after 7 months of paying me crap pay (less then I was making before
quiting to come help them start there business) I gave my 1 month notice.
and left. I Don't mind working. but don't lie to me. don't make promises
that your not going to keep. My employee's were the highest paied like
yours, But like you.. I did Buy them lunchs all the time. and for those
that had rough times. like a few kids. would take them out at christmas
time and have them buy there kids a few extra presents!
I wish you the best of luck in finding someone, and will look you
up when I head down there someday. ( have family still in Florida.
Arcadia area). when I head down.. (use to live in Miami myself)

Well, as great as you obviously are, there is no one to compare... lol
Stay in Delaware, OK?

Consider it disputed. You are great at jumping to conclusions, at
least. :-)
As one who has had both private and public communication with Ghost
over the last few years, I will say that he is the real deal.
Outspoken, sometimes brash, and that bothers insecure people, of
course, but he has the ability and credentials, and is a good guy.
You, I think, made a conclusion based on insufficient information...a
bad thing for a technician to do.

| If I lived closer I'd come and work for you. I'm retired
after 30 years in the business. Yes, they did have
computers back in those days, you just needed a crane to
lift them. I spent my last years on the job with a dozen
servers, 400 users, and 1 co-worker. Your shop sounds like
an easy environment.
