BIOS Update question

| I'm trying to get around a 32GB limitation that's on a buddies system. He's
using an old Motherboard (M5ATA) and it has Award BIOS Version 4.51PG
installed. After reading (yes I read the directions ...lol) the first issue
brought up in the Maxtor troubleshooting section was this 4.51 problem, so
I've been snooping around looking for an updated driver. I can't seem to
find a driver that mentions INT13 updates and he wants to get this thing
installed. The drive is a Maxtor 80GB and it has a capacity limitation
jumper but Maxtor is not sure if that will get the problem resolved. We
could work around the 32GB limaitation until he buys a new motherboard, but
I'd like to get it resolved with this motherboard. I don't want to come back
later and try my luck running partition magic to reclaimed the unused space
and take the chance of losing his data. I also want to mention that I've
never updated a bios, so any words of wisdom will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brick

| The last update for the BIOS was May 1998, if this is a Biostar.

Why not create partitions?

| I won't say I do or do not recommend this, but have you thought about
trying Maxtor's drive overlay? I know there can be many complications
with that, but if you are just looking for a quick solution, that
would do. I think Maxtor calls it MaxBlast, or something like that.

Just to add a little something about Maxblast - I've used it more than a
few times with older motherboards along with the cylinder limitation
jumper and so far no problems. Even when your buddy eventually buys a
new motherboard, just move the 80GB drive over to it. Maxblast will see
the change and work fine.

its a chipset limitation, a BIOS flash wont help. And the people suggesting
overlays are giving bad advice in my opinion because those things really slow
down a system. $20-$30 will buy you a used or possibly new ata-66/100
controller. that motherboard is probably ata-33 or worse, and the drive you're
trying to install is surely at least ata-66. Of course they're backward
compatible but a doubling of speed is worth it.. remember to get an ata-66
cable, too. And think of it this way, if your buddy buys a Promise ata-66
controller, he can always move it to a new system someday, add a resistor and
set up a RAID array.

| There are three possible answers to this question:
1. Check with the system or motherboard manufacturer for any BIOS upgrades
for the system. If there are no BIOS updates from the manufacturer you can
visit www.esupport.com for a BIOS update. Maxtor Corporation has no
affiliation with esupport.com and offers this information as a courtesy to
our customers.
2. (Recommended) Purchase a PCI ATA controller card that will support the
capacity of the drive. The two benefits of ATA controller cards are:
the ability to support large capacity drives
the ability to support the faster transfer rates of the drive. Maxtor's
online store, www.MaxStore.com, has a complete selection of ATA controller
cards that support all Maxtor drives.
3. The last option would be to use our MaxBlast Plus II software. The
MaxBlast software will install an overlay (EZ-BIOS) on the hard drive to
support the full capacity of the drive.
Hope this helps....
PS. I have a PCI ATA controller card on an older motherboard .... all I
could say is F**ken fast for an old Motherboard.... lol

| Hi!
I'm using M5ATA too, i have modified BIOS for working with harddrive above 32Gb. This BIOS can be found on my homepage http://m5ata.chat.ru .
But this BIOS has 65 GB barrier. If you need BIOS that supports harddrives above 64Gb, then mail me: andyrdr@mail.ru
