no brainer question that i can't answer

i keep screwing up a certain type of question of my A+ practice tests.
here is the type of question:
which IRQ cannot be used when installing an external modem?
which IRQ cannot be used when installing an internal modem?
i believe the answer is different for both, i assume it has something to
do with the type of connector? serial or PCI? i've got all the IRQ'S
memorized, but can't catch the logic here. i know i'll kick myself when
i find out. my brain is so fried from cramming , i would appreciate a
freebie here. also, does anyone know of a good, direct resource to
study port and connector configurations? i am sick of getting partial
info . i thried pcguide.com, but i am obviously not using proper search
terminology.
thanx mucho

| A lousy question! An external modem does not use an IRQ, the serial port it is
connected to does, and could be 3 or 4, or none at all in the case of a USB
modem. An internal modem cannot use IRQ 1,2,5,6,7,13,14, or 15.
