| Hey all, great newsgroup!
I have been in computers for quite some time, and would consider myself very
hardware driven. I am currently reading Mike Meyer's all in one A+
Certification. Great book and appreciate Mr. Meyer's humor interjected in a
text book of sorts... Will hopefully be doing the tests shortly.
I have helped people for some time, and have come across a few good programs
that are free that have helped. I know of a few good ones that are quite
costly, but for some of us just trying to start out, and Mr. Meyers has
recommended a few, can anyone give some of their favorites?
I'll start the list with a few that I have found. Belarc Advisor for
finding system information. Kind of like Sisoft's Sandra, but very scaled
down. Very easy to use, and occasionally, gives some good info.
Memory testers from simmtest.com. I have used them for a few years, and
great at helping with the consistent memory address errors. Granted, the
errors should point to it directly, but I like to make double sure...
This is by no means an advertisement, but always looking for some good
freeware/shareware that will help a fledgeling support person such as
myself. If you have any suggestions or recommendations, please post and it
will be much appreciated.

Hey comeons,
thank you for the suggestion! I'll have to try that one...
Know of any others that are not program specific, per chance?
Thanx again

| I guess my two most used are CheckLinks and RegClean - always have them on
a floppy whereever I go. A couple other favs are having System Commander
for formatting drives and a couple low-level partition tools.

| Hey Russ,
Thank you for the recommendations. I forgot to list regclean, but should be
a must in any toolbox ;-). I use the one from jv16.org, but I know that
there are others, like the one created by msn, but not supported....lol.
Do you have a download site on checklinks? The ones I found on google are
mainly for checking web links, but not sure if that's what you are referring
to.
Another good program that I have found to be handy is lavasoftusa.com's
adaware. Have seen quite a few ie issues get resolved by just running that
cleaner...
I also took the programs off of Mike Meyer's cd, which seem to be very
handy. My CPU, simple little program, but very handy on troubleshooting cpu
issues and need to know what the heck is in there...
Another resource that I have used in the past is the motherboard identifiers
at http://www.motherboards.org just click on the mobo id tools and they give
quick links to manufacturer's sites. The BIOS id string is very helpful.
Nothing beats an all in one like sisoft's sandra, but just curious as to
what others are using. I'm not certified quite yet, but thinking that maybe
the biggest hurdle for certification to experience is having the right
tools. I have tried quite a few free ones off the net, and some are very
good, but others can be fairly poorly written. Just interested for any
other ideas on this thread.
Thanks again for responding.

Ouch, okay, now I do feel dumb...lol. Didn't realize that you were talking
about the extras on a windows 98 cd... Got too caught up in the whole net
download thing for diagnostic programs... Believe it or not, I do know Doc
Watson...lol.
Great list, though, didn't know about half of what was on there... Now,
where did I put that windows 98 cd??
One more program that I forgot to post, tweakui ... can't believe I forgot
about that one. Do you get the sense that I like programs instead of
manually doing everything?? I blame Sesame Street for my short attention
span....lol.
Russ, thanks again :+)
