A good place to start is http://www.linux.org/dist/
There are so many different flavors of linux that it's about like asking
what is your favorite brand of snack chip.
What do you want to do with your Linux?
An easy to install for beginners distro is Mandrake from
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/
Or even Red Hat at
http://www.redhat.com/
For a server distobubtion KRUD is good from
http://www.tummy.com/krud/
If you want a Debian then I can't give you any suggestions.

| Good thought, nothing is better to learn about your hardware than linux
itself
by the time you have passed over the newbie stage on linux...you'll know
more than enough about
hardware to make even A+ guys stupid...
Although, I have taken that statement bit extreme, but its a fair
statement...
Anyway
Glad to see, someone over here trying to use linux
If you are new and don't know anything about linux, you should first tryout
with one of these
www.redhat.com
www.mandrake.com
www.lycrois.com
Once you know your way a little, you will probably know where you want to
head anyway
Although, if you are looking for stability, your best bet is
www.debian.org
debian is probably one of the hardest to install(according to some, I find
it fairly straight forward, simple and to the point), but once installed,
without doubt its the easiest to maintain, secure and update.
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
even windows can't match that
If you want latest and greatest,
www.gentoo.org
I use this for my desktop wuff wuff (although my server is running
debian)
I'd recommend you stay away from gentoo, cause this will require some
hardcore patience, and learning.
Gentoo is source based, so pretty much everything for gentoo is downloaded
as source and compiled by your machine, and that can take long time, My
desktop computer is a product of almost 2 days continous compiling.
