Author NT vs 2000: how similar are they?

I was talking to a friend about finding a copy of NT to get some hands on
experience. He said "don't bother, just get 2000. If you know 2000 you
will know NT." Are they THAT similar?

Windows 95 =2 Window98
Windows NT =2 Windows2k

In my mind they are very much the same
