Author Mini-molex, or Berg connectors?
Jeff Brady

2002-08-29, 10:28 am

The connectors on a PSU .. I know the large (HDD, CDROM, etc) connectors
are Molex. The smaller connectors (FDD, etc) I've learned in the past are
"Berg"
connectors. However, the PDF from Cramsession.com labels them as
"mini-molex".

What do you people know them as?

It's always been Berg to me. I've never heard mini-molex and therefore
it is not a standard term.

Bergs, but in "popular usage" they're probably more often called mini-molexes.

I've always heard them referred to as, and called them, "Mini-Molex", and
two of the three textbooks I teach from call them that. The third book
calls them "Berg" connectors. Call them whatever you like, but if you see
either term in a question on an exam, or they happen to become part of the
conversation during a job interview, know the two are one and the same. One
of the several reasons for NOT relying on one source for your study
material.

When I heard the term "Mini-molex" in relation to a PSU's connectors, I
automatically
assumed they were referring to a Berg connector (and they were).

I was just curious if anyone else that "Berg" was the real name of them.

Actually, calling the larger connectors (HDD and CD) "Molex" connectors is a
bit of a misnomer in the first place. Molex is a company that makes those
connectors, and many others as well. It's quite likely that ALL of the
connectors coming from your power supply are Molex connectors. They
manufactured the old P8 and P9 connectors, they manufacture the modular ATX
connector and for the P4s they also make the 4-pin modular connector and the
other auxiliary power connector that looks similar to the old P8/P9. This
is in addition to the ones we know and love as "Molex" and "Mini-Molex" or
"Berg".

What THEY call these various connectors is another matter. Like most
manufacturers of small parts, they refer to them using mysterious names like
"AU-37" (Just a hypothetical - Not a real designation AFAIK) and the such.
They've got an online catalog at their web site (www.molex.com) if anyone's
interested in being a real nitpicker and wants to figure out the REAL names
for these connectors. As for me, I'll continue to call them "Molex" and
"Mini-Molex" as I've done for over a decade, misnomer or not. Old habits
die too hard at my age.

I've seen both names in the literature. I call them Floppy Power
Plugs so that people will know what I'm talking about as I almost
never talk to fellow technicians about such things and have had other
techs ask what both were from time to time.

Molex and Berg were manufacturers

Molex started the white connector with the large pins (power connector for
drives) and was the primary supplier of connectors for the automotive
industry, strong, hard to unconnect, high current.

Berg made (makes) the smaller pin, square format, Like you see now on disk
drive data cables et al.

The "correct" answer to your question would be in a catalog by Berg or
Molex, not what techies name them.
