A+ Meyer's course password
|
|
|
| August 21, 2002
Hello there:
I got the A+ Meyer's book that comes with a practice cd.
Some of the tests are locked and you have to register them
with a site called "Softlock" but it went out of business.
I was wondering if any of you have a password to unlock these
tests?
The book and the tests are excellent and it would be a shame
not to be able to use them.
Thank you in advance for any help in the subject,
Regards,
Matt

Hello Matt (and Mike),
Unfortunately, when Softlock went out of business, their proprietary
method of assigning unlock codes went with them.
Because these codes were created using a complex procedure that
involved specific information about the user's hard drive, it wouldn't
be possible for someone to share their unlock code with you. (Well,
technically they can share it all they like, but it won't work for you
unless they actually send you their hard drive as well!)
The good news is that those extra practice exams are still available,
but through a different avenue. The old way to access them was to pay
US$79 for a Softlock code; the new way is to buy a full, unlocked
CD-ROM directly from Total Seminars for US$75 plus a few dollars for
shipping and handling. If you're interested in doing that, just check
our web site for more info.
Best of luck with your studies,
Cindy Archer

Right, wrong, or otherwise, I doubt that they could crack something

Well, if I am not mistaken, this requires a situational key, where it
generates a key first and then you need to get the "reply" key to
match. Not that it would be impossible, but I have seen this type of
system in action on some types of electronics service software, and it
would require some recoding, I would think, to get past the aspect of
the first challenge code. I may be wrong about the nature of this, as
I am basing my thoughts on the electronics service software that I
became familiar with. Any hard drive changes, such as full defrag,
repartition, Ghost, etc., and a new key was needed, and it was
different from the first, and any others, each generated from scratch,
and based on another key generated by the program itself. I guess
there must be a way of beating that, but I am not knowledgeable enough
to think of one.

| The CD comes with the boo. It is part of a package. Why should I have to
pay $75.00 to access something that was part of the package I bought?
am I missing something here?

Yes, I think you are missing something. Do you have the CD in question? I
do, and I can tell you that there are 14 tests that are accessible on that
CD for free. In "practice" mode, there are 3 core tests and 3 OS tests, same
for "final" mode, 3 of each for the core and OS. Adaptive mode has one each
free core and OS tests.
In addition there, there are 34 locked tests on the CD. Those are the ones
that Mike Meyers would like to sell to you, but can't because the keygen
company went out of business. So he will instead sell you a new CD for the
same that it would have cost to unlock the locked tests on the original CD.
You are already getting all the functionality that was supposed to come with
the purchase of the book. All of the free tests work.
I guess I am missing something too, maybe you can explain it to me. I can't
understand two things. One, why would anybody want to pay for that many
practice tests? Why not learn just the material, instead of studying to the
test?
Second, why would anyone who reads this newsgroup think it is acceptable to
steal the tests from Mike, when Mike and other folks from his company take
the time to post here? How many book authors do you know, who are willing to
help you personally?
I have heard not one story of bad service or unanswered complaints against
him, something that is remarkable in an unmoderated newsgroup. Very few
manage to please everyone, I know I don't. :-) Not to mention, he has
more than once given away his book and CD to people in this newsgroup,
simply became they said they couldn't afford it.

I'm sorry I was harsh, and sorry for the misunderstanding. I though you were
more or less saying what's the big deal about getting the pay practice tests
without paying for them. I was mistaken, too.

| Yes, you are missing that it clearly states when you purchase the book that
ONLY a part of the CD is accessable. (At least it says that on my copy - 3rd
Edition).
They make no secret that if you want to access ALL of the CD you must pay an
extra charge.
They are far from the only folks that do this.
