Zip drive not recognized in Windows XP
|
|
| condor 2002-07-29, 8:25 pm |
| An internal 100 MB Zip drive used on a pc with Windows ME. After an upgrade
to XP, the pc does not even recognize the zip drive. Doesn't show up in
device manager.
Anyone else come across this problem?

| Thanks Stew. Yeah, I know to stay away from the dreaded upgrade. It's a
users home pc that is having the problem. I told him I'd take a look at it
after work. Just wanted to check if there was a "known issue" I wasn't aware
of before I went over there.
Thanks, Andrew

Not with ME to XP, but I had a similar problem with a 98SE to 2000 upgrade.
I had to go to Iomega's site to get NT/2000 drivers. You're also going from
a 9x (DOS-based) OS to an NT based OS, so you may want to try that approach.
Remember that the Zip is an ATAPI device like a CD drive, and thus requires
drivers that a pure IDE/ATA device won't need.

I feel that I should point out that this is the REAL W.F.Peifer, a
fine and valuable contributor to this great newsgroup.
Tom
PS-To all of you lurkers...your presence is important also. The
reasons are many, and one that comes to mind is that, every now and
then, one comes forward to really make a stand, from out of nowhere.
Some of you will never post here, some will, but only sporadically,
and some will end up being active for a time, but you are ALL
important. Thanks!!
PPS-I wonder what would happen if every lurker here made a single post
against the spoofing...make your point known, if you have one to make.

Checked my history database, and came up with a 4-5 "won-lost" record for
Win2K installs and Zip drives using Win2K native drivers. Digging a little
deeper, I found that I was 1-5 with the first release of Win2K and 3-0 with
the version with SP2 built in. The one success with the "old" Win2K was a
Zip250. The 5 failures (corrected with Iomega's drivers) were all Zip100s.
Take the numbers for what they're worth. And it's no guarantee that XP has
the same difficulty, but it's a possibility.
However, I concur on the Iomega Tools. If whatever you end up using to get
the drive seen also installs the Tools, I recommend uninstalling them,
leaving just the driver for support.
