Author Parallel problem?

This problem is driving me crazy!

I have a client with a printer (Canon BJC-265SP) and a scanner (Canon
Canoscan FB330P) that originally were chained together (printer then scanner
then parallel port) and worked well. He had w98SE re-installed and now they
refuse to work on his system. The scanner is simply not recognized by the
computer (error message - no scanner present) and the printer reports the
error message - "cannot detect cartridge type!!!".

I assumed that we had a parallel port problem as when I tested both of these
units on my system (both seperately and chained together as they were) they
worked perfectly. I installed an PCI parallel port on the clients system and
ran the setup. When the units are connected they report the exact same error
messages!
This happens both seperately and chained together.

It obviously is not the scanner or the printer, I've installed a new
parallel port so the only thing I can think of is that it is the mobo.

Is this the right line of reasoning? Can anyone point me in the right
direction?

do you have any conflict in device manager?
the new parallel port card what parallel mode did you configured? if it's
configured as standard then you should configure as EPP/ECC or at minimum at
Bidirectional

No conflicts
ecp+epp mode selected in BIOS

Do you think it could be the motherboard?

By the way you have an excellent website!

Sounds like you have a conflict with the scanner software or drivers. Try
deleting all scanner entries, also in the registry.

This is what I might try: 1st - Load the most recent version of the
motherboard drivers...... Remove all cards except for video then try it
again. If that doesn't work go into Safe Mode and remove peripheral
devices that use IRQ's (sound, modem, NIC, SCSI etc. - leave video )
including the parallel port from device manager. Attach the printer
alone and boot the system. If it sees it then attach the scanner..... I
would also load Win98 fresh using a different hard drive, with only the
video card installed, then load the mobo drivers/patches. Then connect
the printer by itself and load the newest printer drivers. If that works
then attach the scanner along with the printer, load the newest scanner
drivers and try it again. My theory: when you re-installed Win98, it
overwrote some updated parallel port drivers. When you did the
re-install did you get any messages saying that an older file was trying
to overwrite a newer file? How did you answer? ........ I don't think
the mobo is bad.

BIOS refers to the mobo parallel port. You are configuring an extension
card. try to see if there is a jumper on the card for parallel mode.

If I were u I would Deactivate the mobo parallel port. connect the printer
directly to the pci parallel card. Boot onto ms-dos and enter this command
copy c:\autoexec.bat >lpt1
if the file prints, well it's a windows problem, if it doesn't then it's
conflict between mobo/pci card parallel ports
