| I have 2 brand new Netgear FA311 Ethernet cards, to set up my own network.
One PC running XP, the other 98/2000. Both connected with Cat5 UTP crossover
cable. I installed the cards, both PCs recognised the new cards and drivers
installed. In device manager all seems well. I have no lights on either card
flashing. I changed the NIC to another PCI slot and still the same problem.
There are no conflicts indicated. The message I get is LAN connection
disabled. If I try to enable it returns with same message. As a matter of
curiosity I took the card out and replaced with an old 10 MBS Realtek card
which has installed fine ??
Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

| If you haven't got any link lights it might mean there's a problem with the cable. Is it definitely a x over cable?

| What protocol are you using to connect??
NetBUEI?
TCP/IP?
Make sure you have one installed and picked in the Network properties.
Do you have an ISP? Does it connect through the Ethernet also?
Troubleshooting is the name of the game..............

Not all NICs will support X-over cables, linksys for example. I don't
know about Netgear but you might want to check. Is there any possiblity
of your getting hold of a hub and a couple of straight thrus to check it?
Also, in XP & 2000 you may want to go to network neighborhood/properties,
right click on the LAN adapter and select "enable".

| This may sound silly, but also make sure you don't have onboard ethernet on
one of your machines already. If you do, disable it in CMOS.
Also make sure both machines are using the same protocol. Netbeui or TCP/IP
and if the latter, that they are configured with valid IP addresses and
subnet masks.
Finally, if there is no link light on either machine, the cable may not be
functioning or supported. If you have a multimeter you can test for
continuity.
Let us know what you find out.

| I have tried several cards and can not get an IPCONFIG on any, message reads
Media Disconnected. I think the Motherboard must be to blame somewhere here
?
Also the PC runs very slowly with the Netgear Card In, also the HD led is on
constantly, and my CD Rom disappears, remove the card and PC runs quick
again, also CD Rom is back. I am getting close to my wits end !!!
