I have a 3 year old Gateway (P3 500) and noticed a weird hum every once in
awhile that only goes away when I tap the case. Any idea on what is
happening? Is my fan brushing up against something? This happens at least
once a day. I think it's being doing this for the past few months. Thanks
for your help.

Sounds like it is more than likely your fan. Open the case and take a look.
Intermitent fan problems seem to, in my experience, be a sure sign of a
slowly dying fan , especially if you tap it and it works again. If you're
still under warranty, Gateway probably won't send you a new fan assembly,
but they will send you a new power supply complete with the fan. Not a bad
deal.

I've had hard drives make noises like that before they die. Backup your data
now!

Open up the case and identify the source of the noise. It's a fan or a
hard drive.

Look for wires or other items that may be touching the fan. I had a HP that
had a cable touching the fan and it caused a noise, luckily it did not do
any damage to either the cable or fan. A few tie-wraps have it all cleaned
up.

I had the same symptom in my last computer -- it was the fan on the Pentium
233 causing the flimsy aluminum heatsink to setup this awful hum -- not all
the time but sometimes, like you describe sometimes tapping the case would
cause it to cease, but iwas real annoying. I have not had this problem
since switching to a Celeron, they have higher quality fans and more sold
heatsinks.
