| On a relatively modern PC, running Windows XP Home Edition, I insert a CD
(call it CD A) in the CD-ROM drive and it works fine. I insert another CD
(call it CD B) and it does not show up at all. It is as if no CD is in the
drive. I insert CD B into another computer (running Win98) and it works fine
there. I'm at a loss to explain this. Any ideas?

| Are these commercial pressed CDs, CD-R or CD-RW? If they are CD-R or CD-RW
are they top quality or the cheap stuff?

| If you reboot and put CD B in before anything else, will the PC read it? If
so, is it a CDR/W drive? If so, try updating the packet-writing software
that came with your drive or removing the packet-writing software just to
see if that is the problem.

They are commercial CD's. One is the XP CD. Another is an installation CD
that came with a modem.

Try another CD-ROM drive. If that doesn't fix it, just change the
muffler bearing.

| Sounds like your CD drive is failing. Replace it. JB.

Try cleaning the drive before replacing it. If the user is a smoker, I will
add that nicotine plays hell on the optical sensor in the CD drives. I hate
to see people spend money if all that is needed is a good cleaning.
