Author Dell not shutting down properly

Normally my Windows 98/Dell computer automatically powers down after the
operating system shuts down. But now after I 'shutdown', the "Windows 98 -
Your computer is shutting down" screen appears as it should but stays on
forever. Now I must physically shut off the computer. What could be
causing this?

Note: When I reboot the computer I am NOT forced to run Scandisk so I guess
the system is shutting down without any problems to the filesystem.

Regards,

Chris

The problem is Windows 98 and this is a well documented problem with a few
possibilities. Check http://support.microsoft.com for more information.

What kind of Dell do you have?? My Dimension 4100 suffered from the BIOS bug
that would cause it to not shutdown properly. Dell posted a big Knowledge
Bank article on their website and they even sent out BIOS updates to
Dimension 4100 users. Although I know a lot people are really paranoid
about flashing their BIOS, this was an update that had to be done. Best
advice I can give you is follow Dell's directions very carefully.

If you want to lookup any recent updates for your Dell, check here:

You might try running MSCONFIG, clicking the advanced button and checking
the "Disable Fast Shutdown" box. Fast Shutdown allows the system to
shutdown without first shuting off all of the device drivers. There are
some systems that can't handle it for some unknown reason. Just a thought.

Also, if you check Microsoft's web site (you may have to do some digging)
Microsoft 'knows' about this problem, and has a fix for the 'hanging shut down'.
