Author Restart during defrag - opinions?

Hello all
I know the advantages of defrag and that ScanDisk should be carried out
first but I would like to know what others think about the further
preparation for defrag.
1. Turn off the screen saver
then
Choices:
a. close down everything in the task manager except Explorer and then run
defrag
b. restart in Safe Mode and run defrag

I have read in several places that the Safe Mode way is better but I think
that I have more success by using the Task Manager.

What do others think?
Thanks for your input.

Usually ......the best way is to start in Safe Mode and carry out your Scan
Disk and Defrag from there.......the only other way is to hit the task
manager and stop all the tasks EXCEPT Systray and Explorer........

But i just let DiskKeeper 7.0 do all that work.....better way to go.....it
can work while you are working at ur computer

The main idea is there would be no access to the disk except scandisk or
defrag. As for me I take no precaution except closing all applications.
On windows 9x If scandisk stop and restart continuously I am pretty sure a
process is running in background so I'll use file monitor from sysinternals
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml to see in real time
what is accessing the disk. (great hint to understand why a computer is slow
or unstable)
On windows 2000 scandisk ( the real one, the one that repair ) will run in
dos mode upon boot

do a search for game launchpad(freeware). it'll close everything running in
the background. i've had clients run it before defragging and it worked.
