What advantages of school over home study?

Exchange of instructor and peer knowledge, interaction, and personal
networking. Diverse hardware-base to take apart and explore with full-lab
facilities. Study groups and motivation factors and just a few reasons for
taking classes.

A school will give you the info in an organized format and go over it with
you. It also gives you the capability of study groups and networking with
fellow IT future pros.
Self study is much cheaper.

Hi

I am questioning my investment of NZ$1900 on a 5 day course. I am
going pretty well just with the courseware and the prep software...

It was nice to get the week of instructor input but to be honest, it
was 80% just reading out of the manuals which I could have done
myself. The instructor was very good though - and provided a lot of
his own experience throughout the course and actual situations where
he provided support to a user.

Delving into the boxes was good but we had run out of time for that
and only had an hour or so on the final day. HW is the bit I have had
the least to do with as well and I really wanted to pull a PC apart
and put it back together!

Cheers,
Jody

It is only my opinion, but i suggest self study vs. school. The rationale
is simple. Why spend thousands on courses when you can spend less than the
cost to the course(s) and buy the necessary hardware required to create your
first hands-on lab. In addition, get a hold of a study guide from a popular
IT Certification site like www.real-it-exams.com to ensure yourself a pass
on the exam . This way you can gain "HANDS ON" experience and get
certified. The internet and these newsgroups should be a great resource for
information and help whenever you need it. In fact, I think you will learn
even more through this method and have fun learning it too.

Good Luck.

I think home study is best if you have the ability to direct your self-study
program, what the HR people call a self-starter.

BTW, I was considering going to a local community college for the MCSE
because the regular cost per credit hour is $53. But the school charges
over $150 an cr. hr.. for the MCSE. So I think I'll just do that at home
too.

Well, different strategies work for different people. I did my computer
hardware class in school. That kind of environment works better for me
because it feels more structured and I had somewhere to go for help. Some
people might fare better with home school tho.

A heck of a lot cheaper for starters!
