Hi everyone,

I recently got two computers, an AMD 233 and an AMD 350, I installed
Win98 in both, and they appeared to be working perfectly. However,
both have the same problem: Windows will freeze if I do not have a CD
in the CD drive. These two systems have different motherboards,
different CD-drives, but the same problem. In addition, the AMD 350
keeps reinstalling the sound card driver every time I turn on the
computer. Do any of you have any idea what could cause this problem?
Could both computers have damaged motherboards?

Thank you

Luis

first, i'd check the boot order in bios, and if it's set to boot from cdrom
first, change the boot order to something like FLOPPY, HDD, CDROM... i would
suspect since both machines are having this issue, that they probably have a
similar bios revision... perhaps a bios update would address that issue.
second, with regards to the sound driver, it would sound like the driver
being installed is the wrong driver... might want to check on the
manufacturer's web site for an updated driver. finally, no, from what you've
said, i do not believe that both boards are damaged.

best of luck

I had the same problem with the sound card driver reinstalling when I
had the onboard audio enabled as well as having a sound card
installed. Check the boot order and look for updated BIOS or drivers
like others said as well. It seems like the CD-ROM situation would be
reversed if there was a resource conflict .. but then again, it never
hurts to check. Is it possible that the computer is getting too much
power when the CD-ROM drive isn't running? I have no idea, I'm still
working on my A+ cert...

It's strange that the two computers would have the exact same problem
though...

Here's an update to my problem which has baffled me even more...
I tried all of the different boot configurations in CMOS and I still
get the same problem. When the CD drive is removed the computer works
excellent. I removed the CD-ROM drive and connected a second hard
drive in the secondary IDE controller, and then the computer stays
stuck at the "detecting hard disk" screen (yes, I have both drives
properly jumpered). If I connect the second hard drive as a slave,
then the computer completely ignores the master hard drive and tries
to boot from the slave hard drive! I don't know what to do next...does
anybody have any ideas?

Thank you

IRQ conflict, disable or remove something you don't need.

Is it possible that something in the BIOS is telling the computer that the
CD-ROM is a hard drive? When it's running in Windows, do you get the "CD"
icon for that drive?

If you haven't already, might also try reversing the IDE cable connections.
If you connect the 2nd as primary and the 1st as secondary, does it boot
normally?

Bios, it sounds like you need an update to your Bios. Anytime theres a
situation where your machine can't recognize whats being plugged in then it
says your system doesnt have good enough basic driver support.
