| Do any of you guys know how to get into the BIOS of a computer that seems to
be locked by the manufacturer. I had one last week with a friend of mine. It
was a Hewlett Packard and del did nothing.
These people really dont like you venturing in there.
Many thanks

Clearing the cmos may do it. Look for a clear cmos jumper on the
motherboard. Unplug the computer, and either short or open the jumper (the
opposite of whatever state you found it). Wait a few minutes, and then
replace the jumper to it's original position, plug the computer back in and
boot up. If you can't find the jumper, removing the cmos battery does the
same thing.
Just be aware that clearing the cmos means all bios settings will revert to
the original default settings. It might take you a while to restore optimal,
or even functional settings.
You could also try asking HP. If the machine is no longer under warranty, I
don't see why they would deny you access to the bios.

| remove the cover and look for a 3 pin jumper, it will be near the battery
(about the size of a nickel)... typically, pins 2-3 are jumped, temporarly
jump pins 1-2 with the power to the pc off... reset the jumper position to
2-3 (or the original setting) and power up the computer. you should get an
error (162?) that says checksum invalid, load default? choose yes, or you
may have the option to enter setup at that time.

If the system does not tell you which key to press to enter BIOS setup, you
can force it to by causing a keyboard error. Either unplug the keyboard upon
bootup or press and hold a key on the keyboard to cause the setup message to
be displayed.

| I know that Dell uses the F2 key to enter the BIOS. It may be worth a try to
try this.
Maybe someone answered your question, I didn't read all of the replies to
this question.

| As per usual, everyone on this group is fantastic.
Thanks for your help.
Things that have puzzled me in the past, suddenly spring to mind, so i post
the question and within hours you guys give the answer.
Cheers
PS. Great result for the US in the World Cup.

I don't Know About HP's But Some of The Older Compaqs Have Very Odd
Keystrokes to Get Into The BIOS. You Have To Wait Until A Cursor Moves
From The Left of The Screen to The Right And Then Hit A Key (F10 as I
Recall).
Andy Is Completly Right, It Is Easier to Cause an Error on Some
Machines

| Not all Motherboards use DEL. Many boards use their own key combos. Go to the MVB Manufacturer's
website and check in the support section.

| others to try are:
F1 key
ALT+S
CTRL+ALT+S
CTRL+INSERT
But checking the MB manufacturer is still your best bet.

| I've never seen a locked bios. Some manufacturers add a splash screen that
hides the option to go into it, but I've yet to see a locked BIOS, cept for
pass protected, but those you reset via jumpers.

| Hey,
If you are using a USB keyboard...read below...things that make you go
.....mmmmmmm : )
Guess what...I had the same problem...DEL would not work to get in BIOS.
Problem was that I had switched my keyboard to a USB one and didn't switch
to full USB capabilities inside the BIOS. This affected me on POST but
didn't affect me after bootup when inside Windows. I had to take off the USB
adapter on the keyboard and plug the keyboard in the regular way (PS2) to
enable full USB support inside BIOS. After that...I attached the USB adapter
again and was able to use DEL to get inside BIOS.
If you have a USB keyboard....check that : )
Peace
