| Warning ! Hard disk failure imminent. Immediately backup data and replace
Primary Slave harddisk drive
That's what comes up during POST . It also says to press F1 to continue.
Windows XP
PIII 733
Phoenix BIOS
Their are two hard drives ...
the Primary master is 80 GB 1 week old
the Primary Slave 40 GB Maxtor 1 1/2 years old
All the jumpers are set to the correct pins. In the Bios , the setting for
detecting the hard drives are set to Auto. Could the old hard drive have
bad sectors? Or could the Bios need to be updated?
Has anyone seen this error before?
Any input would be great.

| Yes, the BIOS is getting a warning from SMART (a diagnostic system
within the drive). These warnings should be taken seriously, although
the drive may still be working, it is LIKELY that it will fail
completely within the next few weeks or months.
Do a backup, then contact the manufacturer if the drive is within
warranty (sse my previous post). If it's out of warranty, I'd buy a
spare drive now, and copy the system to the new drive (with Ghost or
Drive Image) while you still can.

| Yup
I had a 3 week old drive die a few months back. Was a total pain, but at
least I was able to do an uptodate backup before I returned it foe warranty
replacement.

| I used to have problems with a specific harddrive giving that error
that were installed on Compaq computers. If it's still available
I used to upgrade the BIOS with a Rompaq. Check www.compaq.com
and do a search for 1720 Imminent Harddrive Failure. Only a specific
type of harddrive gave that error. If it's not a compaq check the
manufacturer's
website to see if they have had issues with the drive you installed.
If there is an issue with the drive make sure you have the right upgrade!

| check the manufactures website and download their diagnostic program! For
Western Digital that would be their Date Lifegaurd. Make sure you get the
latest version. These utilities ussualy give alot of info about what is
happening to the drive. Some will even generate a RMA for a faulty drive
that is still under warranty! Alot of manufacturers will require you run
this software before they will take the drive back.
The Good news is, if it only 1.5 years old it is most likely under warranty,
that is as long as you are buying a good brand. Most Maxtors, Quantums, and
Western Digitals come with 3 year warrantys

| Thanks for the input people!!!
Most likely I will send this Hard drive in for a new one. I'm not even gonna
bother to check it any further with any diagnostic program.
