| 16. The mouse pointer moves erratically. What is the possible cause?
The Mouse:
A. Ball is dirty.
B. Is not connected.
C. Driver is not installed properly.
D. Has an incorrect IRQ setting.
Answer:A
13. The mouse pointer moves erratically. What is the possible cause?
The Mouse:
A. Ball is dirty.
B. Is not connected.
C. Driver is not installed properly.
D. Has an incorrect IRQ setting.
Answer: C
Actually, I didn't get this on the exam but this is the correct answer. I
tried using a different mouse driver one time and the mouse pointer was
eratic.
16. The mouse pointer moves erratically. What is the possible cause?
The Mouse:
A. Ball is dirty.
B. Is not connected.
C. Driver is not installed properly.
D. Has an incorrect IRQ setting.
C Most people argue that this is A. They are wrong, the wheels get dirty,
not the ball. Also, I've dealt with an innumerable number of mouse driver
problems that meet this description.

| I think this mouse question can be summed up by the acronym KISS (Keep It
Simple Stupid). Check the simple things first. If that fails, then you worry
about drvice drivers.
Food crumbs, dust, pet hair, etc.. can cause a mouse pointer to move
erratically.

| C is correct
crud build up can cause erratic movement whilst the mouse is being moved but
the wrong driver can make erratic movement even without touching the mouse
the question does not state the mouse has been moved just the pointer so the
answer is C

Bad A+ questions are common place. Every A+ certification suite I
took had some incorrect or misleading questions. Let's look at the
above answers:
A. Ball is dirty
Sure. You could argue this is the correct answer. Dirt gets on
the ball, then it transfers to the wheels, the wheels don't move
freely and blam: erratic mouse movement. Or maybe the contact
between the wheels and ball is impaired by the dirt.
B. Is not connected.
Cut and dry, not possible.
C. Driver is not installed properly.
Since Windows usually takes care of mouse driver installation
(Windows 3.x and before is off the test), this is not likely. I have
NEVER seen a mouse driver cause erratic behavior in my 9 years of
playing with computers. Can't say it can't happen, but...
D. Has an incorrect IRQ setting.
Two devices fighting for the same IRQ will cause erratic behavior in
both devices. The IRQ for PS/2 and COM ports is usually not shared
with other devices. I think the default for a mouse port is IRQ 12
and COM ports get IRQ 4 or 3. Therefore, setting a device to IRQ 12
will likely cause problems with the mouse.

| I don't agree with C. The answer given for C is: "Driver is not
installed properly". This simply is not the same thing as "WRONG
DRIVER", therefore while "wrong driver" could cause erratic action, it's
not one of the choices, and it specifically is not choice "C". I'd go
with A as the first choice. An IRQ conflict could also cause erratic
action (mouse sharing an IRQ with another device in a configuration that
did not support IRQ sharing).
