Drive not being recognized

| I installed a Maxtor 5000LE external drive onto a Windows ME machine
Thursday. I ran a complete backup OK. Now the machine does not
recognize the drive. Device Manager displays the device and says it is
working properly. I have uninstalled and installed the device and
drivers twice. Any suggestions?

| Jim,
It is a good thing that you've made a complete backup, now would be a good
time to change OS. Microsoft has, as I understand, stopped supporting Win
ME. I have been lucky enough that I've only had to deal with it once, on
that one occaision I asked 3 different techs to whom I refer more difficult
problems. All 3 had the same answer, the first step in troubleshooting a
WinME problem is new OS.

| Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. Maxtor's help desk was very
helpful in getting the drive recognized. Had to power down drive,
unplug USB cord, wait 15 seconds, power up drive, plug in USB. Windows
ME strikes again!
Speaking of new OS for client, Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro?
