Outlook 2000 question

| Hey!
I've been working with a computer that runs Outlook 2000 on Windows 2000
Pro. I back up the most important stuff regularly, and I notice that the
address book, which is named wab.exe (another question; why isn't it named
something like "Address Book.wab") isn't shown as being modified for about 5
months; this, in spite of the fact that I know that I have added new names
and email addresses within the past few weeks.
When I do double click on this wab.exe, it is opened by Outlook 2000, and
the most recent changes are included. Yet, for the past few months, it
shows as being last modified in August.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again! And, best Holiday Wishes to all!

| Doesn't Outlook store your personal address book in a file with the
extension .pab, and the folders in a .pst file?

Just a guess cause I am not familiar w/ how Outlook backs up its files -
It is very unlikely that the files are backed up into an exe file. In
the exe file is probably used to restore the backup or show the most
recent back up. There is probably a compressed text file or even a
plain text file that holds the actual backed up data. I can write an
executable file to open a text file named sam.txt. I could modify
sam.txt w/out touching the exe file, but when you execute the exe file
you would see the most recent changes to sam.txt

| I thought that it was either *.pab or *.wab; I think that I searched for
both of these and was unable to find them. I'm going to have to go back and
search again, because Nathan's response (below) was also correct. Maybe the
keyboard was a bit gummy or something...all I know is I better find out how
to back up this file, 'cuz the hard drive is about to crash, and my client
has stipulated that her address book MUST be backed up...
Thanks for replying!

| You are correct about this, 'cuz when I attempted to open up the wab.exe
file on my own computer, it opened up my own address book...

This is what I have to figure out...

| The only way to be fully confident about backups is to restore from your
backups. This gives your client peace of mind. Always have a test machine
available for such purposes.

I believe Outlook uses an Import/Export feature under File on the menu
bar. That should work fine for all the files you are trying to backup
and restore.

THAT must be it...I've once again become confused by MS's lack of
consistency...god forbid, what would happen if you wanted to automate this
with a file-by-file backup, for this one stupid thing, you would have to
change processes and export this one...
lest I digress, thank you for replying, your response certainly makes sense!
