Cd rom drive problem
|
|
|
| Hi all,
I have a cdrom drive that keeps giving me a "cdr101 drive not ready" error.
I have tried all of the obvious things but it still happens. I figure its a
problem with the drive..So , does anyone know of anything that may be able
to fix the drive.. Maybe it needs cleaning? Anything I can do before I throw
it away? Thanks,
Les

If its an old drive or an old O/S then you'l need some config.sys and
autoexec.bat settings. i.e. to make use of mscdex.exe, can't recall
the details off hand but should be on the net if you search for mscdex
cdrom settings etc.
If its not the settings then the drive may be faulty.

| When do you get this message? When you try to access the drive?
Does it open? If yes, can you see the properties of the CD that was just
inserted?

There are CD Drive cleaners that consist of a brush on a CD that help
sometimes. I use mine with a little alcohol. It works about half of the
time. I have a friend that takes them apart and cleans them, but I've never
had any luck with that.
I went to get a new CD drive yesterday and nobody had a regular type drive
just CD/RWs.

| I think you can buy a brand new 52X CD ROM for about $50 Canadian

| If I can find them I have been able to get them for $20 American but of the
three retailers that I visited yesterday nobody was selling a regular CD
drive. I can get them online but I didn't want this going through the
checking account, I wanted to spend cash, which is hard to do over the net.
I have another source locally that I can go to but it's just 30 miles away
and I don't really like driving up there in my old Toyota. Oh well, I guess
I'll have to borrow my dad's truck Monday.

| Don't give up yet...some online vendors DO take money-orders...just
keep looking.
1. www.pricewatch.com (to find the CD-ROM)
2. www.resellerratings.com (to check out the vendor and look at they
payment options)
Good luck,
John D.

How old is the Toyota? Their motors last forever, but they do have
other problems, depending on the age, and where they are used. We have
an 88 Tercel, and an 87 Dodge D100 Ram...long distance travel is iffy
with older vehicles anyway, and 30 miles, for me, is a long drive.
