Is it possible for the CCD lamp in a scanner to burn out or wear out? I
seems like such a simple question, but I don't know what else to think. My
Visioneer OneTouch 8800 scanner on my Windows 2000 Pro Service Pack 2
stand-alone system keeps producing crappy scanning results; I have it
running on a Dell Dimension 4100 with 256 MB of RAM and a P-III 800 MHz
processor. It does still go through the motions of scanning a document or
photo but the resulting pic (in PaperPort, .jpg, .gif, .bmp) has wavy lines
running through it. I've tried adjusting the scanning properties like
compression, brightness, and sharpeness, but that doesn't help; I've also
tried switching between color and grayscale but no dice there.

I have checked on Visioneers web site and they do have a troubleshooting
article about scans from the OneTouch 8800 with "Green or Gray Wavy Lines"
..stm) and it sounds like the OneTouch 8800 might have had some mechancial
problems. Says to take your scanner back to the place you purchased it if
its only a few months old. Unfortunately, I've had it for a year and half
now and my warranty has expired. I'm going to call Visioneer Support on
Monday to see if they can suggest any ways to fix the problem or get it
repaired. If it cost more to fix it than to buy a new one, I'll just chuck
it.

If anyone has ever encountered this problem with a Visioneer or any type of
scanner for that matter? This is probably something that might happen again
(I'd hope not).

Thanks,

eve

I had a similar problem with a Dexxa a few years ago, and calibrating
it wouldn't repair the problem. Staples/Business Depot took it back
and gave me another one (it was about 4 months old at the time), and
the eplacement is working well over 4 years later.

Have you tried a calibration? How about removing then reinstalling the
drivers, or updating them? If it has a physical problem, it may not be
repairable from a practical standpoint, although someone who likes to
tinker may surprise you, especially if it is something obvious.

Thanks Tom for your input. I did try reinstalling the drivers and software
that came with my scanner that still hasn't helped. I even deleted all the
instances of the software from the registry but that hasn't helped either. I
was thinking that it might be my USB port but I've hooked my boyfriend's
digital camera up to both of them with no problem. I haven't had any of my
IT friends take a look at it yet, but I imagine that they might know once
they see the poor scans.

Absolutely the lamps can burn out. The rated life is tens of thousands
of hours (1 to 3 years at 24x7), but that's just an average.

Hi Eve

You wouldn't happen to have a CDR and be running Adaptec Direct CD? It is a
packet writing prog that causes lots of issues with USB devices.

No, just Nero running with my Yamaha CD burner. And, I did have my scanner
working right with my burner since I got it for Christmas last year. I'm
still betting its hardware issue with my scanner, but I won't really know
until I get a chance to call Visioneer support. I promise I'll post the
solution to my problem when I find out what's really going on. Thanks for
your inquiry though....

Just a thought, but what is the power supply for your scanner plugged
into? If it's just a regular wall outlet, then it is possible your
scanner is the victim of a spike or surge and has damaged the 'guts'.

My house got struck by lightening on Easter Sunday (of all days ;-) )
and several of my househould components had to be reset, my Visioneer
OneTouch stopped working, powersupply was toast. Installed a new one
and the wavy line thing kept happening. Bought another power supply
and that didn't fix it.

We now have a HP scanner.

I don't know about the cost of your scanner, but the low end flatbeds
are basically disposable. My HP is now plugged into the surge
suppressor along with my other stuff.

Most of those types of AC power supplies don't have the third ground
pole which makes them succeptible to power problems.

Interestingly, when we first got the HP scanner, I had it sitting
crossways on the computer desk hutch for easier access so the feet
were hanging off the front and back of the hutch. It wouldn't scan
properly - very distorted images - and I know my photo skills weren't
that bad ;-) so I turned it so the feet were on the hutch and it works
fine now.........strange stuff.

How funny you should mention about the power supply and plugging into the
wall. Visioneer actually has posted in the aforementioned article that you
should have the scanner plugged directly into the wall. I think you might be
right about the powersupply; I think it may have been damaged this summer
when we were have some transformer problems. But, it may not because my
scanner still does scan, just with the wavy lines running through the
picture.
