Author Dell BIOS "CTRL-ALT-D" to test Hard Drive

I ran into a BIOS diagnostic for the hard drive today on a Dell system.
On power up you hold down CTRL-ALT-D (the letter D, not DEL).

The BIOS then does a test of the hard drive, and reports any errors
found. Is this unique to the Dell BIOS, or have I been living under a
rock?
