When executing this throug a job it fails:
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_sqlmaint N'-PlanID 00096887-CC1A-
463C-89C1-CD01F2AC2776 -Rpt "D:\MSSQL7\LOG\evonyx2 user
db_s6.txt" -WriteHistory -VrfyBackup -BkUpMedia DISK -
BkUpLog -UseDefDir -DelBkUps 1WEEKS -BkExt "TRN"'

Error message:

Server: Msg 22029, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
sqlmaint.exe failed.

How can I fix this? I am not sure what is wrong. The Sql
Server agent is running and is running under 'system
account'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sqlmaint.exe failed is just a generic error for maintenance
plan failures - you need to check the database maintenance
plan history to get more detail on the error. Right click on
the maintenance plan, and select Maintenance Plan History.
Double clicking on a task will give you more information.
You may want to refer to:

Thank you for your response Sue. I read the material you
posted. This is the message from Job History:

Executed as user: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. sqlmaint.exe
failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed.

I did not see anything in the article regarding permission
issues on sqlmaint.exe. I suspect that the user the
service runs under does not have the appropriate
permissions?

Abe,
Check the details in the Database Maintenance Plan history,
not through the job. This will give you more details.

This may be of no value now, but when you are performing transactional backups you need to make sure the databases you want to backup are set to FULL recovery model.
